Consider the cost and hassle of a new passport when you run out of pages.

You will use up easily 3 pages as they like to stamp on the same page as the re-entry

Is it normal for the Thai immigration to only require the new passport stamp when transferring from an old passport?

No problem. Because I had my new passport mailed to me in Udon, they told me to write my new passport number on the stamp. Then went and transferred to new passport.
