if I went down the legal route and put in B1.6 million in a Thai bank for my wife and I and after say 2 years Thailand is not for me , how easy is it to take the

I'm with you Todd , I talk to 9 out of 10 visa agents and they all suggested using their money to fund the B800,000. Even one of those agents is the daughter of a high ranking immigration officer. Yes Thailand may be corrupt, you think Thailand will stop being what they are if a few people wants to do the legal way. I think not, with stories that people are not going to Thailand in droves now , you think they'll deport you .I think not , hey if they deport me, there's Vietnam, Philippines , Malaysia and other Asian countries I can go to

apply for a 90 days non o or

non oa visa at home before you come to Thailand

You will have to apply for a 3 months Non O visa in your home country prior to coming to Thailand. Use that to open a bank account. But if you're already in Thailand without it you will have to use the services of a visa agent

I'll be using an agent when I get to Thailand and using their money . All the agents do that. What keep 1.6 M baht in a Thai bank earning next to nothing interest where I keep the money at home and earning 5 to 6 % and use the income from the interst to pay the agent , we all win

If you have a 90 day non o visa you don't need a onward ticket .

With 2 individual accounts, what happens if something happens to one spouse does the surviving spouse have access to his or her money . Not sure how laws in Thailand works
