Yes, you can apply for the DTV as a tourist, no problem working for an employer not in your home country. A lot of posts from Vietnam to help you apply.
Interesting, they recently posted a post how effective their app is and an approval in Hanoi was faster via their app than the official website. DIY is best.
Where have you applied? Vast majority of embassies require the 500k in a personal bank account with immediate access. Many Muay Thai applications are approved as posts in the threads show. No official numbers i know of regarding each option of the DTV.
The right to stay for 5 years with 6mths stays is why the DTV is popular. DTVERS know the limitations and are fine with it. I could buy an Elite visa but I think it is terrible value for money so I chose the DTV. Any visa holder could be targeted by a crooked immigration officer, not just DTVERS.
