Last time I cancelled they gave me 24 hours to leave. You can extend IF you pay, but if you don't you are on overstay. Correct?

 the norm IS 24 hours. If you want to extend you can, but the regulations state 24 hours unless you do so. This is not false. Boot away!

You need to inform immigration and then record it. They give 24 hours to leave. Should be able to show you cancelled the WP at border also.
