it's a bit of a dilemma, I'm going to the trouble of applying and paying for a stay that is only marginally longer than a simple visa exemption, but I'm here already so I might as well. And it is a couple of extra weeks, I guess.

a single entry tourist visa is a visa, not a visa exemption entry. You cannot stay in Thailand 90 days on a visa exemption.

Since the multiple entry is also quite a bit more expensive than the single, you must consider if it’s worth your while. It does save you a second and potentially third application, though.
