Ask yourself, is chilling for a few days in S.E. Asia somewhere such a burden that you need to give yourself headaches and possible refusal, which then jeopardises your 'legitimate' emty. If you haven't got peace of mind , you haven't got anything.

That wasn't an official "no". That was a lady who, after an hour, didn't want to to get into further discussion so she gave the quickest answer.

If they stopped letting tourists for trying to (legally although pushing their luck) stay longer their economy would collapse.

it's good advice. But when you say 60k, what do you mean? She needs $60,000 in her account? Why that much? Surely with $3000 , if the couple spilt, she can be self sufficient for a couple of weeks and get a flight back.
