What are the requirements and experiences for applying for a Thai tourist visa at the Kuala Lumpur embassy?

Hey guys,

Thanks to the admins for adding me to the group.

I was just wondering if anyone had attempted to apply (either in person or by using an agent if there is one) for a tourist visa in the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur?

If so, what was it like and what are the requirements asked from them?

I generally do visa runs between Malaysia and Thailand. My two annual land border runs are used and I'm currently looking/researching for any options/alternatives to prolong my stay here. I am based in Malaysia and my visa is set to expire in one month.

I am shocked to learn that Jim's Place Cafe in Penang is closed since the pandemic. So my options are either (a) to self apply through the Thai Embassy in KL or (b) fly to Hat Yai while doing the visa run from there - which too carry its risk.

Any insights, information or recommendations will be highly appreciated.

Thanks again! 🙂🙏

Was the Hat Yai option just to get the 30 day entry stamp?

Yes. That option is by flying to Hat Yai from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia)

That sounds like the easiest option unless you are concerned with getting pulled aside and questioned.

That's the thing. I really don't know how lenient they are at passport control these days.

Unlike prior to the pandemic, they just let me in without asking any questions. So I wouldn't want to assume that thing back then would be the same as now.

I was drawing scrutiny at DMK after a 6 month METV and border bounce to Laos. I was told to avoid Bangkok airports and CNX was said to be easy which turned out to be true. I think if you avoid BKK/DMK you should be OK.

Fair point. Ok, I'll see if I give flying to Hat Yai a go.

If I'm remembering correctly, Jim died last year.

Book appointment at KL and prepare all documents needed

- plane tickets in out

- proof of accommodation

- passport copy (I think?)

-bank account with over 30.000 baht on it (if you have Thai bank you can ask them to make a letter of recommendation)

I think that’s all but check the list on their website

It takes 2 days to make the visa and they do not work on weekends so if you go on Friday you will probably get the visa On Wednesday BUT if not a lot of people you can get it on Monday

There’s an hotel with a very good restaurant just in front of the Thai embassy in KL if you are like me and are afraid to be late

Hey thanks for the reply. I'll weigh in my options by applying in the Thai Embassy in KL (or Penang).

Similar to the above, did you apply for the Thai tourist visa whilst on a Malaysian tourist visa? Given that I have an impression that most embassies would require valid residency in Malaysia before applying.

I was on tourist Visa in KL and I had no problem, they only ask things related to your stay in Thailand

The embassy only accepts RM no baht

Cool, then I'll see if I can give KL a go then. Thanks again. 🙏

Block Georgia.

And I have applied for tourist visas in KL twice. It's quick and easy if you have all the documents you need and they just built an indoor waiting area so no more waiting in the sun or run outside.

Check the website for the latest requirements and make a reservation for your application.

Cool! Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a look in to applying either in KL or Penang. Did you apply whilst on a tourist visa in Malaysia?

I always have an impression that Embassies would require a valid residency before applying - so I was just wondering if its the case.

@John *******
no, they just ask for your "permanent address" and I put my address in my home country

KL requires an appointment to apply. They have a check list of requirements that you’ll need for your visa. You need to print it and tick off all the requirements or they won’t let you in the door.

Penang is easy to do too. No appointments needed just rock up early as it can get busy.

Hi, thanks for replying. I'll give a look in Penang since I am familiar with the process pre-pandemic (given how long the queues are in the morning).
