How safe are visa land border runs using mini-vans in Thailand?

Not sure how to ask this, but how safe are visa land border run's on those mini-vans?

I mean the vans itself and the drivers. Some friends have telling me to avoid them due to accidents, but i don't find that many in last few years.

For those who haven't heard, a school bus carrying 38 teachers and students caught fire in Bangkok today. 20 students and 3 teachers died. The bus driver fled the scene and police are still looking for him.

Absolutely awful for such a tragic loss of life, especially something so preventable. RIP to the families.

Our bus was stopped on the way to mukdahan. About 22 km before mukdahan. Everyone's documents were checked and a police dog boarded and sniffed around. There were no problems, but make sure you don't use this route if you are on overstay.
