Our bus was stopped on the way to mukdahan. About 22 km before mukdahan. Everyone's documents were checked and a police dog boarded and sniffed around. There were no problems, but make sure you don't use this route if you are on overstay.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers reported being stopped for police checks on the way to Mukdahan, warning expats about the risks of overstaying their visas. Various comments indicated that while checks occur frequently, they primarily target those without proper documentation, particularly Burmese nationals. Some users urged that the best way to avoid issues is to not overstay in the first place, while others suggested that routes may vary in terms of checks based on the destination.

Several times I've done visa runs to Poipet, they stopped our van and checked everybody's passport. I thought this was standard for all routes to the common border areas for visa runs?
Maxim ***********
Yes, it's standard near every border. I don't think i've ever been ask to show my passport on random road that wasent mean to go to the border ever.

I find the best way to avoid any problems with these officers is to not overstay in the first place.

If you take the bus from Chiang mai to Mae Sai it'll be stopped and checked 2 or 3 times. But they only seem to look for Burmese nationals and rarely give my passport a glance...if at all. It's been like this as long as I remember.
Ivan ************
I've seen that as well but it is ALWAYS Burmese taken off and detained. Never farang. I think there is some sort of border crossing card that lets people from Myanmar visit Mae Sai without a passport but they aren't meant to go further and they are checking for that.

Yep same here Phayao to Mae Sai police check

Yeah - I would say don't use that route if you're a drug runner, especially if you're overstay.
