Why was my METV invalidated at Thai immigration despite having a valid visa?

I have been in and out of Thailand 9 times in the last 17 months. Always on visa exempt. Shortest stay was a few days en route to Indonesia.

Longest stay was 6 weeks.

Total in any 12 month rolling period 4 months. Never any problem at immigration.

My question: if I continue that pattern should I get METV or just keep going with visa exempt?
