How can I get Thai baht or USD in Laos without using an ATM or exchanging currency twice?

There’s an exchange store right across from the Thai embassy in Vientiane. I needed THB to pay for a visa at the embassy, they exchanged USD to THB for me. Don’t think I got an excellent exchange rate, but it solved my immediate problem.
