You might not need a passport photo. Last year, the Udon Thani immigration office took the photo electronically/at no cost. They politely told me not to worry about bringing a photo next time.

You can blame the “over stay” illegal aliens. Unfortunately, it’s rampant in the US.

It might be worth considering consulting with an immigration lawyer. Especially if you're not confident after some DIY research. My wife and I married in Thailand/obtained her permanent residency 37 years ago. At the time, it took about 8 months, lots of forms, a physical, police certificate and an interview. Not easy...but the last 37 years made it very worth while.

No personal experience on my part…if I was in your shoes, would look into the cost/benefits of a multi entry tourist visa.
