Craig, a tv is good for 60 days so one would hardly be expected to show an onward ticket after just 30,would they?!

I've had a visa everytime, and was asked only once leaving NZ,and by what seemed to be new check-in person.Just explained that the Thai embassy sold it to me having viewed my itinerary. Not a problem then. There's always the option of signing a waver too.
