What are the current challenges for expats and tourists entering Thailand on visa-exempt entries?

why is it not tourism? In the early 2000s I used to come 4 times per year for about 10 straight years. I had my job. I came for sport tournaments in Asia but always came to Thailand before the tournament. I was a tourist for a week 4 times per year. Traveled all over Thailand. Who is to say I cannot be a tourist several times per year? I still have that 56 page passport filled with stamps from all over Asia with over 40 tourist stamps from Thailand.

Why is it difficult to open a Thai bank account without a visa?

i agree. I got my 2 Thai Bank accounts on a tourist visa. But that was 10 years ago. Just need to try multiple banks and see which one will do it. It's Thailand, every location has different rules even if it's the same bank.
