A few years ago, so a lot would have changed since then, but the airline wouldn't even let me on the plane in Bangkok without seeing a Vietnamese invitation letter.

 Really? I didn't have any problems last year when I went there, but the visa was organised through a travel agent so maybe that's why. Monthly border runs were annoying. I believe they have reinstated the 60 or 90 day tourist visas they had before Covid.
