When you get to Udon airport, there's a desk that says 'Limousine Service' or something of that nature. You can get a 200 baht minibus ticket there. They'll tell you when it goes. It'll drop you off at the entrance to the border. Then there's a 30 baht or so bus that takes you over the bridge to the Laos side. On the Laos side, you're looking at a taxi to Vientiane for about 2-300 baht. Tuk Tuks might be a bit less. Some people like to try and share the taxi fair for about 100 each.

12 weeks to get a tourist visa!

I remember driving back from a festival with a group of friends up in Khao Yai a few years back. The road was slippy as hell due to some sort of road works that weren't indicated (obviously).
