I did this exact thing about 3 years ago. Kept both books together and was no problem at renewal.

I went apply for a Non O for my Laos wife and daughter to trail my extension of stay based on retirement. Had everything marriage certificate translations funds etc. I was told the rules have changed. Can only apply for spouse of thai or spouse on business or Ed visa not retirement. Let them in on a 60 day tourist.
