And my understanding is that you can’t get a reentry for the visa itself. Once you’re out without your extension (before getting it), you can’t come back in on that visa.

I don’t know the current state. When I got my nonO, there were 2 distinct variants: single entry and multiple entry.
Single entry meant you enter the country, can stay for 90 days, and when exiting, the visa is done - no re-entry.
As this is more than 10 years ago, I don’t know about the current rule, but I wanted to point you to the difference between the time of the visa and the time after getting the 1-year extension.
