TLDR : Answer Summary
If you do not wish to renew your Retirement Visa expiring in January 2026 and plan to leave Thailand for an extended period, you can withdraw all your money from your bank account without issues. While it won't affect your current visa since you are not applying for another extension, it's noted that there might be limits on how much you can withdraw in one day, and considerations regarding transferring funds out of the country should be taken into account.

You agreed to the terms of your extension of stay which says you need to keep 800k baht in your bank for 3 months after it was granted and no less than 400k baht for the rest of the year so strictly speaking you should honour that. But if you are not applying for another extension nobody is going to check.

You can withdraw all your money if u decide not to extend your current stay send some ofyour money out of thailand and carry only the amount permited without declaration as there s a limit of carry cash out of the country
Nongnuch ********
@Jesper ******
there is no limit to take foreign currency out of Thailand. If over 15,000 USD, it just needs to be declared
Jesper *******
@Nongnuch *******
the OP won't be extending and planning to bring back that 800k its simple to say you just need to declare if more than 15k usd....the OP will be the one going tru immigration will there be any unforseen surprise? I'm saying this for myself i won't be carrying that much cash tru immigration even its declared....yes they can't take away your money BUT they can bring u to a room and start asking questions and waste your time
Nongnuch ********
@Jesper ******
it doesn't need to be declared to Immigration. The declaration is made with the Customs Office at the airport. Immigration has no say in this matter

@Jesper ******
There is NO LIMIT . . . . . you can take out of Thailand an unlimited amount of foreign currency, you just need to declare it if is exceeds 15,000 USD. You are not allowed to take more than 50,000 Thai Baht out of Thailand
Jesper *******
@Greg **********
800k easily exceeds 15k usd...will he be stopped at the airport and immigration going tru his papers of declaration? Will that delay his flight home? Isn't it safer to send some money home and carry the amout that doesn't need declaration?
Chris ******
@Jesper ******
what i guess is the challenge of TT back to home country from Thai banks, usually immergation in countries has law to prohibited amount of hand carry cash.

If the cash brought in can be proofed, including capital gain by selling condo or other local investment , it should be safe
Jesper *******
@Chris *****
can send back by Swift and I've done it before.....I myself will not be taking that much cash tru immigration even its declared...they can't be taking your money but there might be some unforseen surprise and time wasting is one of them

@Chris *****
Right.

I had that problem when selling a painting for 20k in Vienna on Sunday, then driving back home to Switzerland. When I wanted to put the money in my account the told me to better do it in 3 parts bc 10k up would need paperwork to show proof of origin.

in America, when you break transfers apart into smaller units to avoid the law it’s called structuring. And structuring is a separate crime which can result in jail, fines and seizure of the money.

Really bad advice.

I believe other countries have similar laws or everyone would avoid limits this way.
Robert ********
@Brook *******
All over can say is that the teller gave me that advice, I followed it and had the money in my account about 10 minutes later.
Brook ********
@Robert *******
ignorance of the law is probably not a viable defense.
Carla *********
You better be sure the bank doesn’t notify immigration once you withdraw all funds.
Brandon ************
@Carla ********
I've literally never heard of that happening. The bank has no idea anything about your extension.
Carla *********
@Brandon ***********
fair enough. I only mentioned it because someone I know currently on the retirement visa told me that Bangkok Bank verifies that the required amount is still in your account 4 months before its time for visa renewal. And if the funds are below the threshold, they will notify immigration.

This discussion came about because I was asking if the funds just have to sit in that account, untouched, all year long. And that was what this person explained to me. That it would probably be safe to take out up to half of the required amount. But you better put it back 4 months before visa renewal.

I don’t know where he got that info. But I believe him to be a trusted resource. Meaning if he said it, he got it from somewhere reliable.

But do with that what you will.
Brandon ************
@Carla ********
What you were told is wrong. That's not what happens at all.

Bangkok Bank has started a brand new policy that has nothing to do with immigration requirements. If you want a bank letter from them, and the money has not been in your account for 4 months already at the time you request the letter, then they force you to freeze the money in your account for 4 months if you want the letter.

Immigration only requires the money to the be in the account for 2 months before the extension, and depending on which extension, differing amounts and times before and after. They don't notify immigration of anything.
Carla *********
@Brandon ***********
have u heard anything about not being able to get a bank account on DTV, or having existing accounts frozen or closed? I’ve heard the reason is because DTV is viewed as a glorified tourist visa.
Brandon ************
@Carla ********
Someone on a DTV will not be able to open a bank account on their own. And if they have an existing account and the bank wants to check their visa, it could potentially be closed.

The DTV is not "viewed" as a tourist visa. The law that created the DTV specifically says it is a tourist visa.

You can withdraw the money, but… the real question is, can you send it out of the country?

Especially now with all this ridiculous “anti-scam/mule account activity”.
Mark *********
An add on question. Do banks, e.g. Kasikorn have a limit on how much you can withdraw in a day?
Robert ********
@Mark ********
withdraw and transfer have limits that you can set in the mobile app (max 50k per day and 2m per transaction, if I remember correctly).

The ebanking doesn’t always follow those rules.
Mark *********
@Robert *******
Thanks Robert.
Jonnie *******
@Mark ********
for kbank transfers via the banking app the limit can be changed within the app, I’ve occasionally transferred a few hundred thousand baht using this option.
Mark *********
Brandon ************
@Mark ********
Every bank has a limit on how much you can transfer with the app and withdraw at an ATM machine. But you should be able to go into a branch and withdraw greater amounts directly.
Mark *********
@Brandon ***********
Thanks Brandon. Yes it would be over the counter withdrawal and not ATM.
Brandon ************
@Mark ********
Make sure you have your passport and bank book, in order to avoid any identification issues.
Mark *********
@Brandon ***********
Yes. Thanks. Cheers Brandon. People talk about a yellow book and a pink card. Are these necessary?
Brandon ************
@Mark ********
it can be useful in a few circumstances but it's certainly not necessary.
Mark *********
@Brandon ***********
Thank you Brandon.
Todd *********
You can withdraw anytime you wish
Jesper *******
@Todd ********
if he did not keep the 400k as promised and hence the extension becomes invalid will he be fined for overstay? Or shd he withdraw all close to his departure date?
Todd *********
@Jesper ******
his visa is valid for a full year. You don’t need to keep the money in the bank if you have no plan to renew
Jesper *******
@Todd ********
there's a clause that if he did not keep 400k throughout the year it will make his extension invalid....am i wrong about this?
Todd *********
@Jesper ******
yes, I believe so.

The clause you are referring to only matters IF you intend to renew. The visa you hold is not invalidated if you remove the money
Brandon ************
Yes, no problem. It's your money, you can do with it what you want. Withdrawing it would only affect your next extension. Since you are not going to apply for that extension, you're free to remove your funds.

Hi Brandon, my family members would like to cancel their Retirement visa now as they are going to affix their Thai Elite visa on same day of cancellation at Chaengwattana.. Due to the BBL debacle, they have withdrawn the THB 800K maintained from each of their BBL accountm However TE staff told us to put back the 800K withdrawn, in case immigration check and cause problem with TE affixation. I don't see how this would be a problem. Does BBL check bank balance at point of cancellation?
Brandon ************
@Lim **********
Bangkok Bank is not involved. But if an extension has a bank balance requirement, technically that extension is invalid as of the moment that requirement is no longer being met.

Same concept as if you're on a work extension but stop working. If you're on a marriage extension but get divorced. Those end the moment the basis for the extension ends.

You should also have your family double check regarding their qualifications for Elite as they've notified people that were already approved that they now have to go through an extended background check which can add another 45 days.
Lim ***********
@Brandon ***********
TE said because their application were approved before the announcement of additional background checks, they didn't need to wait. So welcome letter sent and waiting to fix appointment for visa affixation at chaengwattana. Thanks for your reply and feedback. 🙏😊
