Should I cancel my work permit and extension of stay in Thailand before I leave?

Me again, I will be leaving Thailand at the end of September, late afternoon 30 Sept to be exact. I understand the Work Permit and Extention of Stay (both only expire on Feb next year), can be canceled on the same day, but one never knows with queues and traffic, etc, I'm worried about running out of time. I understand one can apply for a 7 day extension at B1900? Now my question: Wouldn't it be better to do it the Monday 29th September, then just pay the B500 overstay (hope I'm correct about the amount and procedure), I really don't need more time to "tie things up"? I might return to Thailand by next year May, or perhaps not, things are still up in the air! Any advice will be appreciated!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on the timing for cancelling their work permit and extension of stay as they prepare to leave Thailand at the end of September. They consider applying for a 7-day extension on 29 September, but are concerned about potential delays. Comments suggest that the user's employer typically cancels the work permit, which subsequently cancels the visa, and that it's important to handle the cancellation in advance to avoid any risk of overstaying.

Why do you want to cancel your visa?

Your employer will cancel the work permit and with that the visa looses its basis. You don’t have to do anything.

The OP is not on the original 90 day Visa but is on an Extension of Stay which has conditions which says if your circumstances change you have to inform Immigration so the EoS gets cancelled alligned with the cancellation of the WP. Failing to cancel an employment EoS results in a fine of up to

I've been told I have to go "in person", 1st to Dept of Labor to have the Work Permit canceled (I have to get a signed form from my employer), then to Immigration with proof of cancelation so my Non-B can also be canceled, then I have to leave the country the same day. I'm waiting for a response from my company.

Get a letter from your employer stating your last day of work and you can use that to cancel both your work permit and your extension of stay a week or two in advance. It's not worth risking overstay

I'm not sure I understand you correctly, you say that it can be done in advance, I thought I have to cancel both, then leave the country on that same day?

if you get a letter from your employer stating that you will stop working for them on the 30th of September you can take that letter along on say the 22nd of September and cancel both your work permit and extension of stay, they will use the date provided in the letter as the cancellation date.

thanks, I'll ask them today, but I was made to believe I still have to physically go to immigration, they can't do it on my behalf. Anyway, thanks, I'll just have to ask them again

@Etienne ***********
yes you still have to physically go and cancel your work permit and then take the documentation from that to immigration to cancel your extension of stay
Carol ********
Why are you cancelling them? Previous employers cancelled both for me, I only had to sign paperwork ie resignation letter and they submitted the documents
John **********
@Carol *******
how can an employer cancel an extension of stay? It's in your passport, you need to cancel it.

oh I left Thailand once and the other time I changed my visa

changing visa is fine. Leaving without cancelling an extension of stay is not. It is your responsibility to do this, as per the document you signed at immigration when you received the extension, and if you don't you can be viewed as on overstay and could have trouble obtaining another long term extension of stay until you do cancel it.

I don’t know what I do know is that both times I left my job the employer cancelled everything for me

thanks for your response. I wasn't fired, I asked to have my contract terminated, I'm just not sure what the procedure is, I'm worried about doing both in one day and then having to leave that same day, time constraints are my main worries for the final day. I'm also not hearing from the company, I guess I'll just have to contact them again!

no I wasn’t fired I resigned but the employers did all the paperwork as they said they were obliged to
