Read the detailed explanation of different visas on the Thai visa website It is really pretty clear

Some visa extensions require money in a Thai bank which again is not a huge issue if you have the correct visa

All visa applications are online so there is no physical address to apply for a visa regardless of the country

 Age would be a major factor as the older you are the more difficult getting insurance appears to be

Self funded is still cheaper than home depending on where home is😀
