We applied for a non O visa for my husband approx 7 days before we flew to Thailand. First we thought we need to leave 400k in thai bank hence we waited (wasted) 2 months before applying for a visa to be told he only need to have at least £1,500 in his UK bank to apply for a non O visa. Obviously you will need a few support docs from your wife too. You can apply for visa online so no need to go to embassy in London. We did it in person and picked up visa the next day (we left UK just 3 weeks ago, not sure if rules are still the same). You can ring Thai embassy for more info.
