if you extend at immigration you have to show continued activity so a 6 month course would satisfy that requirement. Much easier to just leave for a short trip nearby I think.

With all visas though they check your history of entry to the country and if you have a criminal record there. Taipei was same day approval and within 6 hours often. They would need instant access to immigration history.
