Thanks everyone, that seems to be a pretty resounding answer to have the application date close to entry date. Anyone have experience of applying with an early entry date, but then entering later on?

A. Nony Mous yeh it's not ideal I agree. I am about to buy my 1st house - so have plenty of money (to qualify for the bank balance part). BUT, I need to live in my house for at least 6 months first for tax reasons. So can't come back to Thailand right now. SO want to get the visa now whilst I have the savings
