As a tourist I have been getting IDLs from the NRMA -which is the NSW Australian multi umbrella insurance roadside assistance organisation - for years. Nothing shonky about these . Read their details . It is my understanding that without it travel insurance in the event of an accident is void.
I also carry my drivers licences from Australia and HK when in Thailand. However , yes they have to be converted to a local license after several months.
Mine is valid for one year.
It cannot be sent to me overseas so must be obtained prior to departure.
I have to provide a passport photo and ID checks for it.
Those of us who have been warning people to book direct with airlines for years and years could make a recording….
Lol
Those dodgy bucket shop agencies are based overseas ie the subcontinent. First problem.
Enjoy dealing with poor English speakers?
Dont worry they rarely answer contact attempts anyway- same customer service strategy as QF and JQ.
Then the booking itself rarely includes selection options like seats meals extra baggage- that is why they are cheap. And adding them due to lack of communication options is difficult.
And of course if you need to change flights, deal with cancellations etc its a nightmare.
Giving them your credit card details is not a great idea either.
