TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the merits and risks of booking flights through Skyscanner, a flight comparison site, compared to booking directly with airlines. Many users caution that while Skyscanner can help find cheaper fares, booking directly provides better consumer protection, better communication in case of flight changes, and more straightforward customer service. Several comments highlight potential issues with third-party agencies, such as scams or poor communication. Ultimately, the consensus leans towards checking prices on Skyscanner for comparison but recommending booking directly with airlines to avoid complications.

skyscanner is my go to, but i double check direct on the airline site

Expedia....Kayak.... Agoda... Skyscanner are my go to sites. You can go through the airline so you never know.

Had flights booked via sky scanner (third party) 2020 and 2021 , both flights cancelled and rebooked no problem. I was in Thailand February 2022 , rebooked for February 2023 , yes you guessed it on Skyscanner 😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Just use skyscanner to see which companies is the cheapest! Yes it might be a bit more expensive but it won't be a big difference . Like people say above it's not worth the risk.

It’s like a search engine for airlines. What Hotelbeds do for hotel they do for flight options

I did use Skyscanner for awhile but found if I need to change flight for some reason you had to jump thru hoops

Typical anti-scottish bashing. Skyscanner saves you millions in time and effort and often a wee bit money.

One thing to also double check is if the price includes checked hold luggage, that the price on Skyscanner includes hold luggage. Many European Airlines now sell tickets with around 8-10kg of hand luggage only for international flights, and then adding luggage cost can make tickets more expensive than most Middle East and Asian airlines that include checked hold luggage (normally 23kg to 25kg) as standard in their lowest price. Also some Thai Airways international flights only give 20kg of checked hold luggage, which can be fine if you travel light or only go for a short time, but may be tight if going for 30-45 days and wanting to bring some extra clothes/souvenirs back.

Providing you are not looking to make any changes, it can work out cheaper. I have nearly always used 3rd party agencies for flights through skyscanner. I had two bookings cancelled, one before the pandemic as the airline changed the first flight arriving after the connecting flight(!) which was refunded quite quickly as a result, and an Emirates flight that was cancelled due to the pandemic, that took a bit longer to get refunded, as the airlines were messing about with slow refunds. Even booking with airlines directly you are not safe. Many people who had flights cancelled with Thai Airways never got a refund after they declared bankruptcy, and are still trying to get refunds from them.

The problems arise when you have issues like delayed or cancelled flights etc.

Yes and.. also airlines and hotels don’t treat you as well when you book with 3rd parties. Don’t like to give you many much or let you change tickets or get refunds as much.
Just use it to compare prices and then book direct for peace of mind

Use google flights to check prices. Then when you found flight go to their website and sign up to be a member of the airline if you aren’t already. Then check prices of the flight you found on google. Then write down price. Log out and turn on your vpn for then other country you’ll be landing - check price again. If it’s changed lower take that price.

Great until you have an issue then good luck 👍

Traveloka I find is generally cheaper also I find that with Skyscanner they spam the cheaper flights but when you try to book they are rarely available.

All the 3rd parties sites have varying discounts and quotas. Best bet is to check around a few sites to get the best deal on your particular flight, just check restrictions and fare rules.

Those of us who have been warning people to book direct with airlines for years and years could make a recording….
Lol
Those dodgy bucket shop agencies are based overseas ie the subcontinent. First problem.
Enjoy dealing with poor English speakers?
Dont worry they rarely answer contact attempts anyway- same customer service strategy as QF and JQ.
Then the booking itself rarely includes selection options like seats meals extra baggage- that is why they are cheap. And adding them due to lack of communication options is difficult.
And of course if you need to change flights, deal with cancellations etc its a nightmare.
Giving them your credit card details is not a great idea either.
Refunds are often problematic .
Bad idea….
Direct people, direct only.

You can use it to track costs but go to the actual airline to book. Will be easier to deal with should there be issues.
Booked direct with EVA after limited options offered with skyscanner which do 3rd party. Got better connection. Can alter flight easily with booking direct with Eva too.

Ive booked thailand for oct 22 and jan 23 through skyscanner and already have my etickets for both

3rd party are always cheaper. The problems arise when you have issues.

I booked Skyscanner return flight to Bangkok, Eva air direct, late November departure, £573, never had an issue, hopefully never will 🙏

Skyscanner shows you several sites.. Most of them seem shady. Just stick to the airlines site to book. Don't be fooled by the low fares on the other sites..

Skyscanner is not a booking platform.

Look at the price then go to the airlines site. If there is a problem booking with a 3rd party will be hell and cost $$$
James ********
I do both. Never had an issue.

Booked numerous flights via skyscanner and never once had an issue, either booking or the actual flights.
Note: As others have said already its just a comparison site, lol seems some don't get that part.
Martin *********
Yes and no.

only book with Skyscanner if you are sure you don't have to change dates. you might get a ticket cheaper but with many airlines you may also have different conditions on cancellations or rebookings and especially rebookings can get expensive

I booked mine on Skyscanner got mine fore 640 direct that was a couple of months ago

trip.com, hutchgo, kiwi (never follow their advice related to visas),and direct with the airlines via skyscanner is the best for me

Many of the unknown companies on skyscanner are scams to mine your credit card data. Not worth the risk.

Get a price from sky scanner then book direct with airline not worth the complications
Scott *******
Think you answered your own question !

Ive always booked through skyscanner, no issues at all.
Mark ******
You can use skyscanner and normally the airline is in the list of providers anyway but slightly more expensive. I just went through an agent on skyscanner with Emirates and no issues coming out! (Touch wood thkugh as last time I was here KLM cancelled my return 2 hrs before check in 🙈... been stuck in worse places though lol)

Simple answer No

I stick directly with airlines as i get better rewards and better services and no fees for reacheduling...

Skyscanner does not sell tickets. They just provide price comparison and then send you to other agencies to do the actual booking.
Not booking directly is always a risk because if there are any issues the airline can't do anything to help you, you have to contact the agency you booked with.
Plus some agencies are very bad at communicating any changes or issue from the airline to you, so you could end up at the airport for your flight only to find out it was cancelled or rescheduled but you were never notified.
It's always safest to book directly with the airline. Otherwise you are gambling to save some money.
