Mine was for a document I was sending back to the US. And from what I read the embassy was the only one that would be official in the US

I have gotten something notarized at the us embassy before, but it is a long process( half day at embassy)and cost like 30 or 40 usd per stamp. I would probably go to a bank when back home and safe yourself the trouble.
