Typically, non-O visa is not too complicated and even can be handled by you and your wife. Foreign partner usually stays in Thailand with Non-O Spouse or Non-O retirement.
Not sure how much it cost for US citizen to obtain the first non-O, but annual extension cost 1900 THB plus 3800 THB to obtain multiple reentry.
If Non-O Spouse, your wife needs to update her marriage status, obtain Kor Ror 22 document in Thailand first, then you need to open bank account and deposit 400K THB.
If non-O retirement, you must be above 50yr, and deposit 800K THB.
Required documents for typical non-O Spouse extension process can be found below. Good luck.
See the document checklist below. If you have all the documents it is not that complicated.
Upon arrival, use 90 day Non-O to open bank account and deposit 400,000 baht. The amount need to be freeze for at least 2 months prior to your visa extension. That's the fastest way. Otherwise you might have to do 60-day family visit extension first to wait for bank account to reach 2 month, then only you can go for 1-year.
You need to enter Thailand before the visa expires on March 15 and apply for a 1-year non-O extension at immigration. From what I understood, Non-O retirement visa extension can be done as a 1-day process. If your document is ready, you can get the stamp within the day itself.
However, it is usually recommended not to risk going on the last day before the visa expires. Extension can be performed 30-45 days in advance. The safest is to go 2 weeks before it expires in case they request any additional doc you will have time to prepare.
Ps. Don't mix visa extension with 90 days reporting.
If you have Non-O or any long term visa type in Thailand, you can apply for a Thai Driving License. Check DLT website for required documents.
My husband use his Indian license to apply for a Thai license a year ago. He didn't need to do any test except the physical exam and listen to some training video.
If you are applying for standard 60-day tourist visa, it shouldn't be a problem at all. Im a Thai and I have been writing invitation letters with proof of accommodation for my husband (then as a friend) many times. We never book hotel even once. Never have issues with Visa on Arrival or normal visa. Your friend might get a call from immigration for verification tho.
My husband and I just done with our Test & Go day 1. The cheapest options now cost around 6-7k thb per person for Test & Go day 1 and day 5 scheme. If you are staying for just a night you should be able to find option around 4-5K thb. Ofc, there will be risks & more cost if u r tested positive tho.
The difference between Sha+ and Sha++ is that Sha++ is the Sha+ hotel with direct collaboration with hospital. They need to send hospital staff to test you. Upon arrival, we were taken to hospital directly to get tested before checking in at hotel. If negative, my hotel guarantee results after 8-12 hours and we r free to go.
Update: we both got our Thaipass now. The hotel staff helped submitting our documents on Saturday morning. Mine came last night. My husband's one was issued this morning. Finally we can head home. Thanks so much for all of the comments.
