TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a 60-day tourist visa at the Thai Consulate in Vientiane after flying to Udon Thani, first, take a minivan to the border and complete the necessary Thailand exit stamp. Then, cross into Laos and obtain your Laos visa on arrival, remembering to keep photocopies of the necessary documents such as your Laos visa and entry stamp. The Thai Consulate, located in Vientiane (not the embassy), does not require proof of onward travel or hotel bookings, just your passport, application form, and a fee of 1000baht, along with two passport-sized photos. It's suggested to apply early in the week to avoid delays, with pick-up of your passport the following afternoon. Engaging a local agent is optional and can aid in avoiding long waits at the consulate.

Got visa no problems at all. Thanks for all helpfull comments (Accept long wait in heat). 2 final questions. When can I apply for 30 day extension? And do I need any paperwork other than passport?

I’ll let someone else step in

We are staying with expat friends who own their house

Depending on how you live , ie hotel or rental contract , you’ll need your TM30 updated if you rent a house here .

You can extend when you have under 30 days remaining I believe. They will stamp you in for 30 days after the "leave by" date, regardless. Bring 1900 baht, TM.7 form, and I believe passport copies.

Just remember you need a photocopy of the Laos visa and entry stamp too . It’s the one bit of pre arrival paperwork you can’t do . But your hotel probably can give you a copy when you check in if the night before or get it done in the consulate on arrival

This site good for all things Laos . Printable visa on arrival forms just use the search engine

When people refer to agencies there are different meanings. In Vientiane it is not possible, as in Penang/Malay, to hire someone to do it for you, you must do in person. We as agency from Bangkok or other agencies can bring the people to Embassy and can help people (our customer) to apply for visa, we can help in asking the employer to send addl documents , etc., but no agency can "ask" for special bla bla bla. Vientiane is very straight forward.

no need to ask private message. Even we are agency to run this service, it is easy to do alone. When you reach Udon Airport, please take early flight, take a minivan , I think, THB150or200 to border, about 45minutes. Stamp out of Thai, bus bus ticket to Laos side, THB40.-, buses leave every 5 minutes, on the Laos side hand in the form for Laos visa on arrival, time depends on how many people there, not forget to stamp into Laos, than find transport to the Thai Consulate( which is at at different location as the Thai Embassy). At the Consulate just walk in and get the form, some girls will help and they ask to make some copy, you will get a number for next day pick up. That day around 13:30 they start to return passport and you pay when you pick up.

Not really any agents in Vientiane - signs discourage it.

Ideally don't go on a Monday or Friday if it can be avoided, if you get there early you will be done very quickly

Also even with the Air Asia late evening arrival you can make it to the border in time.

It's actually easier and cheaper to get the minivan from the airport to the border than to go into Udon. Because from Udon you have to then take another mini van or bus.

It is well worth the (small) money to pay an agent to get your visa. You don't have to wait in any lines and they will pick up and drop off at your hotel.

Then you can spend your time enjoying the sights. And yes, there are actually some things to see in little Old Vientiane.

There's also a green bus from the border to downtown Vientiane bus station about 1 km. from the consulate. Additionally, there are busses that leave from the bus station to the border frequently and all the way to downtown Udon Thani. I've found that much cheaper than taxis if cost is a problem.

25 kilometres

Depending on how much time you have, consider a side trip to the charming riverside town of Nong Khai. If you are arriving in Udon Thani in the afternoon that would be perfect, take a mini bus from the airport to Nong Khai 200 baht, stay at least one night and spend the next day exploring Nong Khai before you cross over the friendship bridge into Laos

You need to go to the Thai Consulate in Vientianne, not the Thai Embassy. They are not close to each other

We are limited to flying airasia only from Phuket which arrives late afternoon. So staying o/nite in Udon Thani. Then go into Laos next morning. Getting hotel near embassy. Then show up early next morning (Monday). All your advice has been awesome.

, the thai consulate in Vientiane is the ONLY consulate that does not require proof of onward travel, proof of funds or proof of a hotel booking. Just your passport, the application 1000baht and 2 passport sized photos. You turn in the application one morning and you pick up your passport and pay the next afternoon.

Keep in mind the holidays coming up when the consulate will be closed

Thanks. We are going after Sonkran finishes Monday 23 April.

I did it in december. you need couple day because once you fill up the paper you need to wait 1-2 day to see if you get approuve or not for the 2 month. Otherwise I guess they give you the free 30 day but I never hear they refuse someone.

I have downloaded the application form. Do you need to glue the photos on to the form or leave loose.

I was just there Monday. You need two passport photos (2.5x3.5 inches I believe, a smaller size) with white background, a copy of the photo page of your passport, a copy of your Laos visa, and a copy of your Laos entry stamp. The consulate has application forms. You can do that at the consulate for 5 baht/copy. You don't need anything else.

A flight out of Thailand and 20,000 baht cash would be good to have when entering Thailand, but Nong Khai land border is easy, I (and others) never have needed to show any of that. Arriving to Thailand by air may be stricter depending on the IO.

As others say, turn in form before 11:30am, pick up between 1:30-4pm the next day. The order for pickup depends on the order of drop-off.

Most as you can and official photo. Ticket to go back is always a good weight to get a visa.

Very easy. Take the minivan service from the airport to border, stamp out of Thailand and then use the bus to cross the river to Lao. From there use the Tuktuk to the Embassy.

Apparently there's a bus from the airport to the bridge. I found a lot of places there are happy to accept Thai Baht to pay for stuff too.
