Vientiane advice:

Traveling to Vientiane via Udon Thani. Can you suggest or advise about travel from there to Vientiane proper? Are there still shuttles from airport to Nong Khai or border? Approximate cost? How about from the border into Vientiane? It's been a million years since I've gone and I forgot how to navigate this piece. Thanks for any suggestions. 🙏✌

(Confirmed appointment at Consulate, lodging, etc. Just need to get myself there!)

TLDR : Answer Summary
To travel from Udon Thani to Vientiane, you have several options. A popular choice is to catch a cross-border bus from Udon Thani that drops you off in Vientiane, but note that these buses typically leave from the bus station rather than the airport. Alternatively, at the Udon Thani airport, you can find a mini van service for 200 baht per person that takes you to the Friendship Bridge at the border. After crossing the border, local rides into Vientiane can be found, usually costing around 400 baht. Another option is to take a train, which may be faster regarding immigration but requires timely arrival due to limited daily services. Always confirm current prices and schedules as they can vary.

Your best off catching the Udon Thani-Vientiane cross-border bus, which drops you off in town. However, I think they leave from the bus station not the airport, whereas, there's always a van shuttle waiting at the airport entrance going directly for the border, which tends to be faster, even though you have to change transportation twice: first at the border, then you catch a local bus across the bridge and finally there's a change of transportation on the Lao side heading into the city.

You can also catch a train across the border as well, which may be faster in terms of immigration procedures, however, you'd need to show up close to the departure time of the train as there are only two services in each direction a day.

Thanks for your response. I'm back from my trip and it was doable from the UT airport with a van shuttle directly to the bridge, a cheap (35thb) bus bridge & then a rideshare into Vientiane proper. Return was a bit more complicated but manageable. (The van shuttle isn't direct to the airport so need to allow extra time for other passengers dropping off in the city) at any rate, hope this thread is helpful for others. I'll leave it up. Thanks!

On the way back, a direct Vientiane-Udon bus followed by a taxi to the airport would have been the way to go.

It’s cheaper to do it without nok air (have done with and without nok air). When you come out inside the airport, look for the desk with the sign that says ‘limousine service.’ You can book a seat in the mini van for 200 baht per person. Ask to go to the friendship bridge and they’ll drop you at the border. From the border into Vientiane, there’ll be people offering you a ride in. We got a van in for about 400 baht I think, there were 5 of us and we got the price down. But cost 700 baht arranged from our accomodation back to the border the next day. Hope that helps.

On the way back to Udon Thani airport from the border, try to negotiate a seat back to Udon Thani airport for 200 baht in a van from the guys offering tuk tuks/taxis. Or you can book a return ticket from the limousine desk but you’ll need to catch a tuk tuk to their office in Nong Khai from the border, about a 6 min ride (cost an extra 50 baht per person for tuk tuk) and they only leave at certain times (Udon kaew tours).

We found it easier to negotiate a van at the border but there were 5 of us so it was easy to get on a van back.

hi, I’m planning on doing VOA in Laos in a few days, if you don’t mind me asking, how much was the cost and was the process easy? Do I need to prepare any documents? ☺️

Depends on your passport but was $40 US dollars for us from NZ (or

baht).

You need a photo (passport size, don’t have to be fussy about measurements) and a spare page in your passport for your VOA. It’s very easy, like other arrival cards. Don’t need to pay anyone to do it for you (as there might be people offering that service). Go straight to the window and fill out the form yourself.

If you do evisa it is $50 US dollars but both times I went to the friendship bridge at Nong Khai/Vientiane there was no long queues to do it on arrival. We got there around 9:30 am.

thank you! ❤️

Oh forgot the bus across the bridge/border is 30 baht each way😊

Yes, it is an easy border and one of the cheapest in my opinion but I understand, it doesn’t sound easy until you’re back in Thailand with the necessary stamp/visa😊 Thanks, I appreciate the help I have got from this group too. Hope you’ll find it an easy trip too.

No worries, did the trip just last month. On the way back to Udon airport, the taxi guys fill a van of people so should be easy to get on. We can speak Thai though so maybe that helped us with arranging transport. There is also a bus that goes into Vientiane and is cheap but takes longer, I haven’t done that though, so can’t comment on that. Also, hope you know about Visa on Arrival for Laos, (if you need that) it’s best if you pay in US dollars but can pay in baht, just the exchange rate isn’t as good. Hope your trip goes well.

Yes, thank you! Expecting to pay for VOA and transport. Just so many moving pieces to navigate this trip which my employer thinks is "the easiest" . Ha. Nothing easy or cheap about it! 🙃🙂
