Technically it is compulsory, yes many have had issues with it. But for me it was a simple process to do, just downloaded it and the hotel reception took a picture of the QR code it generates. They were then happy!
I have done Sandbox twice so far to reunite with family. Both time the price quoted by the hotel directly was cheaper then the price advertised on Agoda.
