Unless you are or have been abusing the visa exempt rules, you won’t have problems with immigration.

I don’t know where you are coming from but a business class flight from Australia is at least $2000- $4000 more than an economy class ticket.

Before you leave your home country, a few hundred dollars and some time, you can get a Non O Visa and you will have no problems with immigration.

If you want to spend time in Thailand get an appropriate visa, no problems.

Don’t panic, I applied for the visa early December last year and received it late at night the night before my flight mid January. For some reason they like you to go in to panic mode.
