I was told, that the retirment visa is THE ONLY visa you can apply now, wjhen stranded in Thailand. Thats, what I was told at Chaeng Wattana.

The regular price for a firsttime licence is around a few hundred Baht, so why pay 5.000 Baht. The folks at the Department of Land Transport are usually helpful people.
