You obviously don't know how it works. Immigration is a part of The Royal Thai Police, while Embassies and consulates are part of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Immigration doesn't give a shit about a visa of any kind,and has the right to deny entry. This is a fact and nothing to argue about.

Maybe you misunderstood him when he said visa. He might have meant apply for the correct type of visa meaning a long stay.

Arriving on a tourist visa won't help a bit at immigration. When arriving on a 60 days visa exempt, you're also a tourist. Same thing.

Having problems with Korat immigration incl. waiting a long time doesn't mean it's the same everywhere else. There are about 85 immigration offices in 77 provinces in Thailand. I'm staying in Jomtien where It's a breeze at immigration when on an extension based on retirement or marriage. No strange requirements here whatsoever, and no need to wait a long time as long as you're not going there a Monday or Tuesday morning 8:30.

Why not simply do a visa run to Laos via an agency? It's by far the easiest way. They take care of everything. Don't make it so complicated.
