yes Peter. i would bet money on it that they marked it or swapped it. Was it a dot that they miraculously pointed out? Always take a photo with your mobile front and back. Take the photos on the counter in front of them so they know you know.

next time go to the bank before hand and get some us dollars. Out of principle i never give the border thieves 900 baht extra for doing their job. Can't stand them and their attitudes. Make sure the US dollars are clean and take photos of them as i have had them deface the notes before behind their little window.

No idea why the airlines are getting involved in the showing of a ticket leaving Thailand seeing you could be leaving overland. Ridiculous, i book a ticket when i need it, not 6 months in advance. Oh well, there's always a simple get around if you know how. Thai immigration yeah, but a foreign airline?
