Why was my wife's US visitor visa application denied despite strong documentation?

Can someone explain this... tried to get my wife of 2 years a visitor visa to the US. Came prepared with every document we could think of. Including chanoot for land we have, bank statements, hell even a sponsor from the US.

Lady asks my wife 4 questions. Doesn't look at any paperwork then just denies her.

Our 6,000 baht gone.

Questions were.

Where are you going

How long

Where are you staying

Oh and how long we've been married.

Had answers to all of it along with documents showing it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses a user's experience with obtaining a visitor visa for their Thai wife, which was denied despite comprehensive documentation, including bank statements, sponsorship, and proof of property ownership. The user questions the reasoning behind the denial, noting the limited questions asked during the interview. Community comments suggest various reasons for the rejection, including insufficient ties to Thailand, the current political climate in the US, and potential biases against applicants from certain backgrounds. Some recommend exploring spousal or marriage visas instead, as visitor visa applications for spouses are often scrutinized more closely.

Im guessing Trump has made it harder to get into country for everyone
Hongyu ******
I’m a lawyer but this is not a legal advice. If you are a us citizen and your spouse is non US citizen, you shouldn’t apply for visitor visa. Instead, you need to petition alien relative through immigration, may be US embassy. Then apply for an immigrant visa. Visiting visas are B1/B2, which are nonimmigrant visas. Your wife does not qualify. Please reapply in the correct category.
Nika ********
Why a 2 year visitor visa? Apply for a spousal visa. It takes longer but is more readily approved.
Bruce **********
Try to do a few trips out of the country. Might help.

I read this and realize how blessed we were to get approved for 10 year tourist visa.

Showing the documents is one thing, passing the interview is another. At the interview she is tested to see if she knows you well, if she knows where she is going and if she has any intention of returning to Thailand. All this to avoid prostitution.
Mike *******
Unfortunately Cris that’s the way it is. It’s always been like that. Very difficult for Thais .

I know a Thai woman that has a job with a Thai government agency. She has applied twice for a tourist visa to US. Has been turned down everytime.

My embassy told me beforehand not to apply for a tourist visa because we were married with kids. I had to apply for a settlement visa which was granted.
Add ******
Did you marry in Thailand? Maybe you need to register your marriage at the U.S. Embassy in Thailand to have them recognize that she married to a U.S. citizen. I married my husband for over 30 yrs, I just went to the Thai Embassy in DC to register my marriage and then went to Thailand to register my marriage there.
Brandon ************
@Add *****
that doesn't have anything to do with applying for a tourist visa
Add ******
@Brandon ***********
Thank you! Now I am more clear in what they were trying to do. But still, that was disappointing.
Add ******
@Brandon ***********
I thought if you registered the marriage, they wouldn’t deny you a visa to the spouse’s country. How could they deny the U.S. entry when she was married to a U.S. citizen? That puzzled me?????
Brandon ************
@Add *****
because there is already a visa process for Americans to bring their spouse to America with a marriage visa. It requires a lot of documentation and takes 12-16 months to process.

They consider a tourist visa application a way to get around that process and expect the wife to arrive in America and never leave.
Cris ******

Sorry to hear that. I wanted my brother to visit me in the U.S. long time ago and his visa was denied too. That’s very disappointing.

It’s the same for the UK, like bro why tf would she wanna stay in the UK? Have you seen the state of it? We only coming to visit friends and family then we are returning to Thailand asap.

It’s not even worth it. I’ll just get my family to visit us in Thailand.

They think Thailand is some sort of 3rd world hell hole people are trying to escape lmao. Look in the mirror, we escaped the UK.
Arnold *******
The USA position: The presumption is that every person that applies for a visa wants to immigrate to the USA. She must present substantial ties to Thailand, that will make her want to come back, such as family (especially kids), land, and a good job and/or a real business, and of course substantial cash in the bank doesn't hurt.
Stephen ************
Why didn’t you apply for American passport. ? Pt green card. Then it’s usually approved. If you didn’t start this process. Looks like fake marriage

Same happened to us. Was denied 3 times. Never looked at any documents on the first 2 visits. My wife said the staff was very rude. On the 3rd, the gentleman was much nicer, looked at all the documents and told her application for tourist visa was wrong. Need to apply for “marriage visa” which turned out to be for a Green Card. But that didn’t suit us either as we didn’t plan on living in the US. Got the Green Card, made our trip, then cancelled the Green Card and swapped for a 10yr visa 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️. We’ve entered several more times on the 10yr visa.

It's very difficult, if not impossible, for the average Thai to get a Tourist Visa to the USA. The fact she has a USA husband/boyfriend, is a big mark against her approval. Don't shoot the messenger.
William ***********
So the woman is married but the husband is not being the sponsor his mom is. Sounds kinda fishy to an interviewer right from the start. That’s probably the problem right there. They could possibly be thinking this is a shame marriage and the wife is coming to be the sponsors paid care giver. Working for room and board is considered earned income. And is a violation of the visa.

Not knowing the particulars about mom’s income. But if she is on Social security and the income is too low that could be a red flag. Many on social security don’t have enough income that they need to file taxes.

If it’s any consolation, my Thai wife was denied a tourist visa for USA. Her Aunt owns a house and runs her own Thai restaurant in Amarillo. My Thai sister-in-law was denied for Australia. More recently, sister-in-laws fiancé who is retired and lives in Netherlands applied for her Schengen Tourist Visa. That was also denied. He made ‘enquiries’ and was advised that there almost certainly was no problem with the information submitted and that if he applied again it would be successful. Exactly what did happen! A subsequent application later the same year went through first time. I suspect it’s a government ‘weeding’ process to reduce their workload by dissuading ‘chancers’.

It has nothing to do with the current president. This has been standard for decades. Do your research, try again. It sounds like you were really focused on the financial side, when really they're more concerned with 1) the permanence of the relationship, and 2) a plan to get in, do something specific, and GTFO. Then, if she acts nervous or confused in any way (which is normal), she'll get denied anyway. Par for the course!

All relationships are temporarily. Eventually one partner ends it by dying. He's married, and had been married for a substantive period. have you listened to any of Trump's speeches or news conferences lately? He consistently blames or disparages Biden and others whenever he gets a chance. According to him, all the bad in the world is Biden's fault, but would have been bigger, better, safer, etc. under him (which is pure, self-promoting conjecture, absolutely no proof). He's like a four year old with the finger pointing and blame game. You really don't see it when it's so blatantly obvious?

When a man has to tear down others and place blame to make themselves look good, as Trump does almost daily, there’s something seriously wrong with their personality and mental state. In my life, I would not accept that attitude from a friend, coworker, or employer. Would you? Why do people accept it in someone who is supposedly a world leader?
James ************

Biden threw occasional barbs at Trump, he did not have a vindictive personality disorder that attacks people with nearly every breath. Trump speeches are filled with negativity, listen sometime. We disagree about Biden's effectiveness, he inherited a mismanaged pandemic, and an economic disaster. The pandemic became a non-issue and the country was in a better place, economically speaking. That has all been undone in the last 2.5 months.

Trump will end up failing the American people. The country will pay for it, financially and reputationally, for decades.
James ************

David ********
@James ***********
we have different definitions of “failed”. I would agree on some of your list, not all. Many peoples views and opinions on success or failure are jaded by the media they consume. Fox News started in 1996, during the Clinton years. Since the beginning, they have been a source of conservatively biased opinion masquerading as news, with a healthy dose of lies and disinformation mixed in. Whatever benefits the conservative cause is fair game with them. They now primarily exist as the media arm of the Republican party. There are many people on the right who have listened to their toxic IV drip of faux outrage, night after night, for 25+ years. Few people could withstand being influenced by such “programming”. If you don’t believe me, try listening objectively to any of the Fox primetime talking heads. It’s not news, it’s opinion with a divisive attitude and void of facts. The same exists on the left, but less so. It’s no wonder things are so divided. I’m not sure of the solution, but it’s probably going to be extreme.
James ************
@David *******
you think ABC, NBC, CNN and such give truthful news? If you do, you should seek help. They all program people to think what they want. Personally, I don't watch any of it. Because it's all tailored to make you hate the other side, and believe you're on the right side. I watched about 2 hours of news in 2024. And that was all election night. And switched back and forth between fox and NBC, ABC.

if your smart you can pick out the facts ant any leaning outlet. And fact checking helps. But your right only the one YOU get your information is correct. Lol

please read, I said the situation exists on the left as well. I didn't speak to any other network specifically. Yes, they all have faults.

@Jerry *******
oh fuck off it was the same during Biden

Nice guy.

I think you're just a little to tight. You need to loosen something up. Right after trump set the stage & put on his own people. Just to torque you up a little bit more.

@Jack ***************
it was not easy with the Biden administration.

I have heard from Thai who apply for US visa. Even though they have so good profile and good history of traveling but got denied. People have been saying depends on your luck and how you write DS 160
David **********
If she does not have a proper job, business or property to return to in Thailand this seems to be an issue for approvals. They are paranoid about illegal workers etc.

seems ridiculous doesn't it. Good luck perhaps get some really good advice and try again, I am not a fan of using agents though.

@Steve ******
Owning a business is not considered high value. Realistically anyone can "own a business", it's actually better being employed with a solid history and good salary
David **********
Wow, that's rough, can't really advise directly as an Aussie but had no problems at all with same situation for us. Good luck sorting it out, surely it shouldn't be that hard for a married couple!
Tony **********
Sadly it will only get more restrictive. Abuses of the past (all nationalities) have essentially locked the doors for citizens of poorer countries. Easiest and quickest (3-6 months) is usually the fiancee visa from what I've read.
Chris **********
@Tony *********
this is the truth. So much rampant abuse and many of those interviewers not under heavy scrutiny. This is what happens when most never return home.
David *********
If she mentions sponsors boyfriends husband who is citizen could all be reasons. Apply for marriage visa wait 2-3 years. Only way. Or go to Mexico, identify as Mexican and walk in. lol. Jk

have a buddy who didn’t listen, got married, now 2 and a half years later is finally at the stage where he is interviewed. My wife and I took only 6 months or so but that was 14 years ago.

I believe right now with what is going on in the US with firings, deportation of illegals, tarrifs, etc, now is not the best time to apply for a visa.

I don't think I would recommend anyone to visit the US right now with everything going on with the government. People are being refused entry, most of the world hates us right now. It's a very sad time for the US. i suggest anyone thinking about visiting do some research first. It's also becoming a hassle for US citizens returning to the US. US citizens are being deported from other countries. It's a huge mess.
John ***********
@Chance *******
i was just in Italy, Paris and Switzerland. Had great conversations about the destruction of freedoms and mass immigration into Germany, France and Italy, with many nationals from said countries. What's happened here has happened there but we stood up and fought. I wouldn't worry, America is fighting corrupt tenured politicians he'll bent to destroy our country.
Rob ********
@John **********
defintiely not saying his administration is perfect (All of us who are educated and open minded arent happy or in agreement with much of what he says or his definition of whats 'fact'.) and DEFINITELY not expecting anyone to visit the US for any reason.

Feel free to express your opinions that the US is a 'shithole', 'on fire', or sending a (the wrong) message to the rest of the world..thats your perogitive.

However, name any 'politician' who has actually done what he said he'd do? the social and economic climate here was circling into madness - a clear majority of Americans demanded a different path for our children and our countries future. (making gender transformation studies mandatory in grades 3-4? Thats madness), Trump's focus on getting control of immigration after the democrats did absolutely nothing about illegals, his focus on wasteful fiscal policies and foreign aid, and regaining control over our economy will piss off a lot of people. Big deal. There will always be people who try to talk shit about those at the top.
Chance ********
@Rob *******
I think you watch to much fake Fox news rotflmao. There was no one taking advantage of us. He is the one that made the trade deals with Canada that he said were horrible. The economy had to be fixed from his last stay in the Whitehouse which is what Biden did. There are no gender transformation studies for grades 3-4. Republicans shot down their own bill that had bipartisan support for immigration under Biden. Basically everything you are putting out there is a lie.
John ***********
@Rob *******
America isn't a shit hole, parts of it have turned into shit holes because of corrupt government officials that would love to destroy our country.
Phil ***********
Rob Moyersy, I agree in principle to your other points about immigration, gender studies crap and wastful spending but you don't regain control of your economy by slapping tariffs on every other country and pissing off your own allies. Have a look at your own country's history during the great depression last century. When the US govt decided to raise tariffs on all its goods in 1930 , it made the great depression a lot worse and longer because international trade dried up and people couldn't afford to buy imported goods. The stock market also crashed and took years to recover . The same thing is now happening worldwide and markets are crashing. Not good for any country including yours. Trump is ignoring history in pursuit of what? He may think slapping tariffs on everyone is going to make the average American wealthy but thats not how economics work.Economists worldwide including in US are saying these tariffs are going to crater the world economy , raise the price of everything and lead to a recession. It's inevitable and Trump and his admin don't seem to be able to comprehend that.
John ***********
@Phil **********
no he's reversing NAFTA and other BS trade agreements that screwed Americans. Seen Detroit lately. See main st America, ghost towns because of these trade agreements that screwed Americans. After all we sacrificed in ww2, should have let Hitler have his way with you, ungrateful dicks
Phil ***********
@John **********
, you dont seem to know much about history but you sure make some big claims. Hitler didn't invade or attack Australia
Rob ********
@John **********
I agree..and the idiots that chime in against your statement are entertaining!
Phil ***********
@John **********
, but not many people outside of the States will visit now considering the tariffs your President just imposed as a big " Fuck you " to the rest of the world.
Rob ********
@Phil **********
Most of us support his equalizing measures against the high tariffs these other countries have against US goods, so yeah, f$&k them.
Phil ***********
@Rob *******
, this was on Australian news after Trumps " liberation day " The Trump administration has put a 10 percent tariff on the Heard Island and McDonald Island which has a population of 0 people and is inhabited only by penguins.

😆 What sort of goods do the penguins produce that US imports? Your president is clearly a lunatic
Ste****
@Phil **********
penguins do produce (poop) guano which is a good fertilizer 😂
Lynnette *******
@Phil **********
penguin biscuits. Or cookies as they like to call them.
Phil ***********
@Rob *******
, yet you expect people from Europe and Asia to visit your country after you've just made them your trade enemies? Are you for real? Have you noticed the effect on the world stock markets particularly the US market? They're all tanking . Trump was a real estate salesman , that's it .. He has no idea about economics and these tariffs will just make everything more expensive even in the US.

Giuseppe **********
@Stephen *******
, pardon me, just a question. Even she not returnes, she is married with western man, what is the problem if someone get visa and go out of Thailand? Why someone, a thai turist visit other country , they are sure wll come back, and even do , thailand is a jail from where they shouldn't escape? Mine was just a question, don't take it personal.
Bonnie *********
@Giuseppe *********
It is the current hellhole of the U.S.
Giuseppe **********
@Bonnie ********
, ok. I just wonder, thank's god out passport has more power
Brandon ************
@Giuseppe *********
Because if she wants to leave and not return she needs to apply for marriage visa. Your question is the EXACT reason why they don't approve tourist visas for married Thais. Because they expect them to do what you said, go to the US and then apply for adjustment of status to remain permanently, thereby bypassing the visa system.
Giuseppe **********
@Brandon ***********
, oh. I thought they were married already
Brandon ************
@Giuseppe *********
They are married. So if she wants to go live in the US she needs to do a marriage visa, not a tourist visa. They don't issue tourists visas to married women because they expect them to use the tourist visa to go the US and then never leave.
Giuseppe **********
@Brandon ***********
, ok. But if someone like to be a turist, can't go? Maybe they wonder why not got visa?
Stephen ********
@Giuseppe *********
same with shengen visa etc. Countries want to be sure tourists don't become residents!
Giuseppe **********
