What are the implications of not filing a TM30 within 24 hours of arrival in Thailand?

Being dragged of to immigration right now. They said I haven’t provided proof of residency within 24h after arrival to Thailand. Even though I did at airport and at the hotel I stayed in initially and paid for it at both places. Now they say I must pay a fine of 2000-10000b .

Is this correct? Please advise

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user has faced a fine from Thai immigration for allegedly not providing proof of residence within 24 hours after arrival, despite having done so at the airport and hotel. The fine can range from 2,000 to 10,000 baht. Community members clarified that the TM30 form, which must be filed by the property owner or hotel within 24 hours of a foreigner's arrival, is crucial. If the property owner fails to file this, the foreigner could face consequences. Solutions discussed include obtaining proof of registration from the hotel or condo management, paying fines if necessary, and emphasizing that the responsibility typically lies with the property owner rather than the foreigner.

The TM30 is a form required by Thailand’s Immigration Bureau as part of its tracking of foreign nationals’ movements within the country. It’s essentially a system for reporting a foreigner’s location to local immigration offices, mainly to monitor and manage the stay of expats, tourists, and other visitors. Here’s how it works and why it matters:

Key Points of the TM30

1. Who Files the TM30? Usually, property owners, landlords, or hotel managers are responsible for filing the TM30 on behalf of the foreign national staying at their property. However, expats who own their own residence or have a lease without a proactive landlord often find themselves handling this obligation.

2. When Is It Filed? Every time a foreign national changes their location in Thailand — even temporarily, like staying in a new province — a TM30 must be submitted within 24 hours. This includes coming back from trips abroad or relocating within the country.

3. How to File the TM30? It can be filed in person at the nearest immigration office, by mail, or, in some cases, online through Thailand’s immigration website (although the online system has had reliability issues). A copy of the TM30 receipt is often needed for other immigration services, like visa extensions and re-entry permits.

4. Consequences of Not Filing: If a TM30 report isn’t filed, penalties can be issued to the responsible party (typically the property owner). In practice, foreigners may face issues with renewing visas, securing work permits, or other immigration-related tasks if their TM30 isn’t in order.

5. Purpose of the TM30: The form helps Thai authorities monitor the locations of foreigners in the country, which they argue enhances security and ensures compliance with immigration rules.

If you’re an expat in Thailand, it’s good to know how TM30 reporting affects your living situation, especially if you travel frequently.

Lawfully, If you stay even 1 night at a family place , your family should do the TM30 yes. If you don't need immigration service, then up to you I guess.

But the rule is that any hotel, or head of household is required to do a TM30 for any foreigner residing at their place within 24h

if you will use your return ticket within the 60 days you won’t be fined. It’s only if you extend or apply for a new visa. But I recommend that you file the tm30 anyway to have your back cleared.

Each place should be registering you. If you "disappear" for a bit, they will start looking for you.

It's inconceivable that the authorities detained you over such a minor matter, which begs the question, who did the dragging? Regardless, the solution is obvious and easy - pay the fine and it's done. It surely wasn't even necessary to come here to figure that out, but now you're here, please explain more about this bizarre story.

Previously, I have had my tm30 filed by owner 3-7 days after I arrived. I forgot how many day but it was for sure after 24hrs of my arrival. Went to apply for an extension a week later and I was fine. However you are supposed to have your tm30 filed within 24hrs of arrival but I feel that in Thailand lots of things are situational and the immigration officer you get. Some are nice and some are not.

Yes. Every time you enter the country (unless multiple entry visa, reentry permit)

At each place you stay. If you go for example for a weekend to Pattaya, when coming back to your wife's rental property you should file a new TM30 again. You can do it within a few minutes online. My advice would be to ask your wife to register online on behalf of her landlord if he's ok. TM30's will be necessary for many dealings with immigration such as extensions or certificate of residence.

The only reason I allowed it to happen was lack of time to argue and my family. Otherwise I would not have hesitated to just walk away and apply elsewhere. Welcome to Thailand, where if someone local neglects their responsibility, it often becomes your problem.

I personally haven’t had any issues with this. My immigration office is pretty relaxed. As long as I have the correct visa and submit my TM47 form, they don’t seem to mind much about anything else.

This story lacks Information.

I don't believe he is being "hauled"

Away by immigration but rather somebody for the building taking him to get his TM30 registered at immigration.

Possibly warning him of potential fines.

An agent likely, who will charge him for their service.

Kinda scammy it sounds.

In my experience he will not get fined or possibly an 800-1600b at worst.

But lets see how it plays out.

so everything is fine. That guy who accompanied you to Immigration would be the housing agent, working either for the condo management or for your landlord who owns your apartment. He obviously took you to Immigration in order to register you TM30 - I guess HE is holding the condo documents which make him elegible to apply. The mentioning of the 2000-10.000 TH fine was just a warning of what would happen if you don't follow him to Immigration 🙂 🙂 🙂 everything is fine, stay calm and behave politely

Here in Jomtien immigration , they give you up to one week to register the address then the fine is 1600 baht. You can register online your address when you arrive in Thailand, you only need to go to immigration to get a TM30 for an extension and that's how you could get fined. If they ask you so much money , just do a border run(60 days) instead of an extension(30 days).

We attempted a couple times to ask our landlord to file the TM30. She didn’t. It was about a month after we moved in that we ended up filing it. We did use our visa agent to do it because we didn’t want to take the risk of getting fined trying to do it ourselves, which seems very likely we would have had to pay.

Airport has nothing to do with it.

If they mentioned 24 hours then that's TM30. It must be filed within 24 hours of arrival at any address. The property owner is required to do it but if they don't then it's you that gets into trouble.

does that include arriving back on a re-entry permit on my non-o retirement extension? I have been at same address for 11 months and will go back to same address after short trip to US.

almost every immigration office requires a new TM30 if you leave Thailand.
