TLDR : Answer Summary
A British national inquiring about the possibility of their Thai fiancé working legally in the UK after marriage received various insights from the community. Key points highlighted include the requirement for a spouse visa, which allows her to work upon arrival in the UK. However, the marriage must be registered properly, and specific visa conditions apply, such as having no recourse to public funds, meaning she cannot claim benefits but can register for NHS services after paying the healthcare surcharge. Different experiences and opinions were shared regarding the complexities and challenges of the visa application process.

Funny - a guy who claims to be British but can’t spell! Hmmm
Tulip ********
who ever said spelling was a requirement for citizenship
Kev *********
@Bent ************
You wouldn't believe how many Brits make spelling errors. They're, there, their, are typical of wrong use. Just because the op didn't use the correct 'to' and put double 't' doesn't cast doubt on being British.
Neil *********
Good luck with that.

If you plan to live in UK for 6 months and Thailand for 6 months, your simplest and cheapest option would be tourist visas which will not permit any Work activities.

If you plan to settle in the UK then you need to obtain a Family Settlement Visa as a Spouse. This is valid for 2y 9m and after 2y 6m you have to apply for an extension, for a further 2y 9m… and again, after 2y 6m (when you are in UK for a total of 5yrs) you can apply for permanent residency or citizenship, depending if she meets the criteria and passes the Life in UK test and also a B1 level ULATS English Speaking test. She will need a minimum ULATS A1 level speaking test for Visa number 1. Then a minimum A2 test for the extension, and a B1 level for Perm Residency or Citizenship. My wife just went straight for B1 which covers all future requirements. She will also need to have a Tuberculosis Lung Xray, and if there are any shadows on the Xray, she’ll need to perform a Sputum sample so the examiners can test for traces of infection. Both Xray and ULATS are done in Bangkok. There are links ok .gov.uk website for recognised centres.

On a Family settlement visa, your Wife can work from day 1 in UK, but is not entitled to any financial benefits. But she can register for a Dr on the NHS because that is why you pay the Healthcare Contribution Fee, approx £3000 now, along with the visa application fee, approx £2000…. Obviously prices will go up, but both NHS Fee and Visa Application fee will need to be paid for again when applying for the Extension visa and again when applying for Perm Residency….and the NHS fee is not offset if your wife works and pays Tax & National Insurance!

Good luck - hope you get your visa and have a happy life together 👍🏻

Its Farang lol.

I don't say Left and Light just because Thais cannot say R lol
Us *****
@Ste ******
you obviously have not been around rich and educated Thais. They can pronounce their Rs and they can actually roll their Rs. The Rs are in the Thai alphabet. You have been around too many working class Thais so they substitute the Ls for the Rs. I learned Thai from a bunch of cute educated Thai girls in Bangkok. They can pronounce their Rs and they use Rs in the Thai language.

When married in Thailand and you go through the right channels for a spouse visa when she arrives in the UK the only thing she is not eligible for is benefits. Can work as she can get a N.I. number and register at your GP surgery and get NHS service. But saying that it's a long and frustrating journey jumping through the hoops and haveing the right criteria ie house job and most of all money to support her.
Neil *********
Eork is frowned on as it involves dumb animals
Tom ********
Why would you want to take her from her beautiful Country and bring her to the UK shithole?
Us *****
@Tom *******
thank you, why aren't you getting slammed with negative comments. I said the same thing and they tried to crucify me for it. Okay, maybe I was very specific. Bad teeth, bad weather, bad food, high inflation, kinda racist in some parts, and etc.
Paul ********
@Us ****
perhaps the bad teeth remark did it as that doesn't affect your quality of life, so why mention it ? It's irrelevant .

Then you say more Thai girls wear braces compared to English girls which suggests that most Thai girls start off with bad teeth but Thai girls , just like Americans all get them fixed up. Can't you see the contradiction in those two statements. ?

Your statement suggests those brace wearing , veneer laden Thais/ Americans are just more vain and conceited. Rather have down to earth people around me than fake, superficial people.
Tom ********
@Us ****
Not sure about 'bad food' I like British cuisine, it's not all beans on toast but the rest of it sounds about right 🙂

she wont wanna work she have farang husband 555😎💯

Being married doesn't give her any rights at all, she still has to be here 5-10 years doing a new visa every 2 1/2 years then passing English test first. For citizenship she has to pass life in UK test. You have to pay for all the visas and pay for citizenship and soon you will have to be earning £

years then passing English test first. For citizenship she has to pass life in UK test. You have to pay for all the visas and pay for citizenship and soon you will have to be earning £38000 a year to even qualify.

We just did it and it took 11 years altogether!
Chris *********
@Joe *********
She doesn’t have to have citizenship to apply for benefits if needed and yes she will be able to work .

It’s not hard to renew visas .

My Thai wife came here in 2003 on a spouse visa , got a job on an agency after one month and after 18 months when we divorced she got legal aid free of charge and a good divorce settlement.

So don’t tell me about rights
Neale *********
@Joe *********
the life in UK test is a complete nightmare

The whole process is also extremely expensive, frustrating and a load of hassle.
Mick ********
She can’t work for the first six months of your Visa then when you apply for a second Visa of two years she still can’t work for two years whatever else they’re saying on this page is bollocks. I’ve been there done.
Neale *********
@Mick *******
absolute BS. My wife came to UK from Philippines and her visa stated quite clearly she can work.
Chris *********
@Mick *******
you are talking a load of crap , she can work on a spouse visa
Peter *********
No not till she has correct paperwork and it will cost you and its not cheap
Andy **********
On a Partner Visa, she can work, but has no recourse to public funds. She will pay tax and national insurance like everyone else, but to access the NHS, she will need to pay the NHS surcharge. If she gets a job with the NHS or works as a carer, that is refunded. A friend of a friend's wife was a degree educated restaurant manager in Thailand, and in the UK, serves behind the till at a bakers. She likes it. Another built a massage business from home in a village. Did a few free meditation sessions at the village hall, put on Thai food at the summer fete, and now the locals are queuing up at £60 a hour. I think you just need to complete a £1000 course in the UK to get the liability cover to into a business like that. But her husband is quite well off with a large property with room for a summer house as the "spa". I expect its quite a sociable occupation, getting to know the locals.
Clive ********
The wage in Thailand varies from 200 to 700 baht a day, a day ffs, my wife can earn that in an hour in the uk, sounds to me like someone has been burnt some what,
Us *****
Why would you torture her like this? You're suppose to improve her life, not make it worst. England has bad weather, bad food, bad teeth, crazy inflation, some part of it is a bit racist, and she won't understand that working class accent. Also, there is a high chance that she will leave you when she starts working and interact with other guys. Come on, you gotta think this through.

bad weather, much the same as all of Europe. Bad teeth, no, the young kids are all getting their teeth done.

Bad food, give over, some great good on offer.

Inflation, same as everywhere, I hear thais complaining about the increased prices.

Racism, mainly from the Muslims unfortunately.

You live in the states, 😂😂

you tell the Thai girls that it is rainy season year round and she will toss that plane ticket in the trash. Also, a lot of UK people don't even like the UK right now. They have the 2nd most exodus of millionaires behind China. Please keep it real.

Bring her to the uk before you marry her , life’s good and easy in Thailand when your together things change when you come here , do a visitor visa first and see how it goes , but if your happy then ye she can work on a marriage/spouse visa but obviously not a tourist visa.
Wayne *********
@Josh *****
why take her to the UK when Thailand has everything
Kyle **********
@Josh *****
I was thinking that mate, my girlfriend is thai but I don't to marry so soon only been together 16 months, she's coming on a tourist visa in April (she only has holidays from work then)until then I go there every few months. Does it not affect the visa process if not married though ?
Josh ******
@Kyle *********
sorry mate only just seen your reply. It will have a slight implication on any future visas as she will have to be outside of the uk for more time than she spends. My girlfriend stayed for 6 months and they told her she couldn’t return until the following year. Otherwise no it won’t impact the visa it will actually be a very good supporting document when processing the spousal visa.
Ian **************

If you marry her through the British embassy consulate then she will have the same rights as any other British woman , when she arrives in the U.K. she will have the spouse visa and she will be able to work , I know this because I was married to a Thai woman 20 years ago .

Good luck
Galenus ******
Chris Maynard well, as you said....20 years ago: outdated!

then you will know Chris that she will have no recourse to public funds and that is not the same as British women ….

@James *******
You are very much mistaken my friend . He has married her through the British embassy and when she comes to the U.K. on the marriage / spouse visa it will be his responsibility to support her , she will be able to work and will have the same rights as any British woman .
James ********
@Chris ********
“no recourse to public funds “means she can’t claim any benefits, nothing to do with work … and not the same a British women
James ********
@Chris ********
ok let’s try another one … she won’t have free access to the NHS the same as British women

hi chris. I am getting married to my thai fiancé in the new year. British embassy doing all the necessary paperwork in Bangkok. ( note she visited uk last year for a couple of months. If she returned next year with me. Is she able to work. Is it possible you think? Cheers. 🙏🏻👍

Cheers chris. 👍
Chris *********
@Michael ******
Yes of course she can work . You just need to show marriage certificate and spouse visa .
Dave *********

Adam ********

visitor visa need to prove she will go home. Spouse visa need to prove she will stay. 555
Paul ******************
Wayne ******
It's probably best to get her 2X visitor Visa ...see if you meet all the criteria ...it's not easy but doable .

Then if everything goes well then go for the 2.5 yr Visa ...then she can work,but can't work with the visitors Visa ...there's English tests to be completed ...and the

Life In The UK test ...which most UK people would fail.

It's a 7/ 8 year ordeal for citizenship...then a Passport . Be prepared to spend over 10k
Neale *********
@Wayne *****
I went through all that hassle and my ex hated living in the UK and ended up going home. Complete waste of time and money
Wayne ******
@Neale ********
that happens ...that why I did 3 visitor visas ...then we did the long road to getting the UK passport . So far my wife likes it here more than Thailand.

I'll be retiring to Thailand in the next 2 years
Neale *********
@Wayne *****
hope it goes well for you. Good luck

When my wife came here on a spouse visa she was able to work; not sure about a fiancé visa, though, if you’re planning on getting married here first. Would definitely be worth getting married over there before bringing her here and then get married here
Kev *********

you don't need to marry in both countries. An official marriage registered at an amphur office in Thailand is recognised as legal in UK. You'll need a certified translation of marriage certificate notarised by Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

you’re right; we haven’t got married in the UK either. But I know some people like to do it in both countries for various reasons. But agree, not needed if you don’t want to 👍🏻

Labour has frozen until there is a review. Previously, the income threshold was set on the average income a couple would be on before resorting to benefits. Now it is based on an average professional's salary, which makes no sense. The government wasn't previously interested if a couple lived comfortably.
Ian **************

no chance sadly. But somehow we will get there
