Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience bringing their Thai wife to live in England. Can you tell me what the requirements are for the marriage visa and what the rules are if she wanted to work? Also what the steps are to gaining a permanent visa/residency?

Is it all fairly straight forward? Or not?

Thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirements for bringing a Thai wife to live in England include providing a marriage certificate, evidence of relationship (such as wedding photos), and financial statements to meet the income threshold (around £18,000). After obtaining a dependent visa, she can work full-time and may apply for permanent residency (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after a designated period (typically 30 months). It's recommended to check requirements with the British embassy in Thailand.

Thanks everyone for the input, I'll have a good read through this and check links. It won't be for a year or two but wanted to try and get my head around it as much as poss in advance. Cheers!

Marriage certificate, wedding photos.

I can't remember 3 or 6 months bank statements. I used the Barclays statements. Dependant visa is easy to get if the girl is your wife (not a girlfriend). Can't remember the visa type.

She is allowed to work full time on dependant visa. After that she can apply PR in UK. Everything is easy straight forward in UK. Just ask the requirements at the British embassy in Thailand. Good luck :-).

You (although technically it's her application) apply online and then submit everything at VFS in Bangkok. Now they scan everything to the UK where the decision is made. Settlement visas are no longer decided by the Embassy in Bangkok (although Visitor visas still are).

You will need to exactly meet the financial requirements as described by Gareth Youaintseenmeright Davies, and prove you are in a sustained relationship. She will need to pass the A1 English test (this can be done in Bangkok) and have a TB test. You will also need to show that she will have accommodation in the UK.

If she gets the visa she will be able to work in the UK. In 30 months she can complete the next stage on the way to Indefinite Leave to Remain and then, eventually, citizenship if she wants this.

Caleb is asking about Settlement visas not Visitor visas. There is no requirement to return to Thailand for a Settlement visa but there are tough financial requirements.
