Hello everyone, I have visited Thailand about 30 times in the last 30 years but only on Tourist Visa’s up to 30 days, I have studied Thai Visa options this year as my situation has changed but even though I myself am a fairly intelligent guy, I can’t find the right answers so here goes: 🙏

I leave the UK next week forever, I have a METV (multi entry tourist visa obtained in the UK) I will be marrying a Thai national in February 2019 (in her village in Isaan) and then hopefully in Thailand we will get the documentation to make our marriage official. We will both hope to return to the UK in May 2019 for our honeymoon for about 3 weeks.

My fiancé needs a visa to leave Thailand in May 2019 to visit the UK for about 3 weeks, but I then need a Visa (I believe a marriage visa) for then us both to return to Thailand afterward’s to live our life together (as my METV will have nearly expired).

I assume my new visa will be a marriage visa, is this easy to get?

Any help please would be so gratefully appreciated, thank you so much 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is seeking visa advice as they prepare to marry a Thai national and are planning to live in Thailand after their honeymoon in the UK. They currently hold a Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) and will need to secure a visa for their fiancée to visit the UK as well as a marriage visa for their return to Thailand. Responses suggest obtaining a Non-Immigrant O Visa in the UK based on marriage, followed by a year-long extension of stay in Thailand. Some comments also discuss cultural considerations regarding the Thai marriage practice of sinsod.

Okay, the Visa question got answered. Now the discussion start about sinsod and western and Thai standards which has nothing to do with Thai Visa advice. Time to close commenting.

This is not a visa advice but another advice. Never ever pay sinsod. If her parents want it just say no never. It is not in my culture to buy my wife. They will give in and say okay no sinsod.

check my other answer but yes, I would never habe any problem with my wifes parents loosing their faces and yes I wish Thailand would adopt more western standards and stop living like we did during the 1700-1800th.

@Robert ******
well, the bride and groom gets money gifts from all the guests. At least 1000 baht/person so for me and my wife we got more money back from the guest than the wedding cost with 300 guests in Bangkok. And my wifes parents went out official and said they didnt ask for any sinsod. Usully it is only cheap low educated people from the countryside that asks for sinsod these days. And yes, I said to my wifes parents I would never ever pay sinsod because it is just like buying my wife from her parents and I would never do that ever.

so you want your wife's parents to lose face and adopt to western ways.
Robert *******
You pay sinsod and her family pays the wedding party or you pay the wedding party. Either way you pay.

@David ***********
Let them lose face than. Thai people have to learn todays common policy and so many things in Thailand are things that the western world did 50-100 years ago.

@Erik **********
unfortunately to many Thai they lose face. I know many who have the money and got it back.

Get the Non Imm O visa in the UK and then apply for the 1 year extention of stay at your local immigration office in Thailand.

As far as the "marriage visa", once you're married and back in the UK, get a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O visa based on marriage to a thai BEFORE you wing your way back here. That will give you almost 15 months of stay in country (in 90 day increments) and will get you sorted visa wise here for a while.
Tod *********
You can get 9 months of stay out of the 6 month METV (in 60 day increments). That should be enough time for you to get here, and decide whether you're going to stay or not.

I'd say you're getting the cart WAY before the horse on planning what visa to be on AFTER you come here, get married, take your thai wife back to the UK and then return here to live.

I'd cross that bridge when you get there.

Congratulations and Best wishes. You may wish to explore the needed steps for your fiancee to get visa to the UK. As well as your obtaining a Thai marriage visa.

Follow these Instructions for your Wife to obtain a Visa for the UK.

************************************************************

Remember. There must be a reason for her to need to return to Thailand and you must clearly show that in the supporting letter. Whether she has children, owns Land or has a full time job. Marrying you is not enough.

With regards to your visa you can obtain a Multi Entry "Non Imm O" with an extension of Stay based on Marriage at Sawanaket, Lao, currently without any proof of funds. Show them the Marriage Certificate and supporting letter behind, Your Wifes House Book and ID Card and your Passport. If you can keep 400K Thai Baht in a Thai Bank Account for at least 2 Months prior to your application you can go to a local Immigration Office in the Province where you will live and apply for a Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa based on an Extention of Stay for marriage so you will not need to leave Thailand at all for a 12 Month period.

To get married in Thailand please follow this Website. If you have ever been married before please bring with you your original copy the Court issued you with of your Decree Absolute (Very Important).

Thank you so much, the best advice I have had up to now so I am very grateful to you. My future wife has a daughter in Thailand, she owns a Condo in Bangkok, I rent a different Condo in Bangkok, and she works in a restaurant so I am sure she can prove she works there if she can get a letter from her employer. The B400,000 in a Thai bank account I have already and it can stay there forever.

Thank you so much again for your advice, as it’s such a minefield as most people will know. So I am most grateful for your help 🙏
