New to the site and from what I have seen I will probably get some great advice.

Looking at moving to Thailand to be with my girlfriend and looking to get married.

Im 53 currently working as a prison officer.

She owns her own home and runs her own business.

What is the best way for me to get out there? I would also like to work if possible.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is planning to move to Thailand to marry his girlfriend and is seeking advice on visa options and the possibility of working there. Responses suggest several pathways including the Marriage Visa, which allows for work with a relevant work permit, or a Retirement Visa, which has less paperwork but generally prohibits working. Many responses emphasize the complexities of obtaining employment as a foreigner, alongside suggested alternatives like working online, teaching English, or helping with his girlfriend's business. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding Thai labor laws and the necessary qualifications for employment.

How could someone be planning to marry a Thai and not know the answer to those basic questions?

Nothing wrong with exploring all the options - how many times do you hear expats whinging they've been turned over which wouldn't have happened if they had their wits about them

ok but I'm just wondering how he managed to date a Thai girl to the point of marriage without setting foot in thailand

If she has her business then help her make it better and enjoy your life together. (does she have a flower shop

SCUBA instructor or English teacher are the two most popular jobs for expats. The SCUBA instructor would be cool if your GF is somewhere near tourist ocean side town. From what I understand it's difficult to get hired as an English teacher after 50 (I taught for a couple years previously).

Now you're left with...

If I were you I would focus on acquiring remote work skill-set.

This is the very latest retirement visa requirements. Health insurance not necessary

You probably wouldn’t need to work out here if you have work pension. I sold my house in fucked up uk and invested the money and uk pension and alls well. You sound like you have a nice lady and good luck to you. If not resort based you might struggle with language Thai is nigh on impossible to learn and not many speak English away from the resorts which will be big problem. Thailand is a beautiful country. I hope you have a good experience here. I’m having a great life now. I’m so blessed 🙏

Nelson Periyar - last June I wanted open a bank account in Thailand. Then I was informed that I must arrive in Thailand on a Non O visa if I need to open a bank account.

Therefore last Monday I went to Thai Consulate in Sydney seeking a Non O Visa. To my surprise I was told that I must have a bank account in Thailand to apply for a Non O visa.

Sorry mate! I am sick of this Non O Visa!

Stuart Moran need a sum of 800,000/ baths in a Thai Bank to a minimum of 3 months. If sponsored by the house 400,000/ baths? Also need to enter Thailand on a Non O visa to open a Bank account? Hope I’m correct?

sorry for interrupting, what is non O permit?

You can get married and let your wife business employ you. Or Establish Thai company with her and apply work permit. Neither Retirement visa nor married visa will allow you to work in the kingdom of Thailand

@Tichy **********
do you realise that you contradicted yourself?
Tichy ***********
@Colin ********
I beg you pardon? I answer the guy who own this post. You dont have automatic right after visa granted. You may need to bring your non-o to ministry of Labour and find employer who want to employ you to gurantee and not every type of jobs that foreigners can do to breach the employment law which reserve for Thai citizen. I am a law firm and visa agent and never tell my clients that they dont need work permit.If you really dedicated to work choose Non B Business visa.
Colin *********
@Tichy **********
after I pointed out that you contradicted yourself, did you read your original comment?

With your first two sentences, you pointed out ways that the guy could possibly work in Thailand. Then, in your last sentence, you said that a marriage visa wouldn't allow the guy, a foreigner, to work in Thailand. While a retirement visa certainly doesn't allow one to work in Thailand, a marriage visa does, as long as the appropriate criteria are met, including obtaining a work permit.
Tichy ***********
@Colin ********
Do you have work permit ? I gave my advice to the guy who post for advice. If you have your own comment write under everyone comment Maybe Ring immigration tomorrow or consult your lawyer and ask them about immigration law. Not everyone who on marriege visa allow to work .While the Thai Marriage Visa, in its essence, doesn’t grant the right to work in Thailand, it opens doors for securing a Thai work permit. This permit, issued by the Ministry of Labour, is a prerequisite for legal employment. It’s crucial to note that not all holders of the Marriage Visa are automatically entitled to a work permit.

Incorrect. You can legally work with a marriage visa.

The easiest way for a foreigner to make money in Thailand is to work online and don't tell anyone.

I certainly wouldn't be starting a business within the first 2-3 years until you understand the lay of the land and have some decent ideas. Don't be one of the guys who blows all his money and ends up back in the UK working until he's 70

You can get a spouse visa once married which allows you to obtain a work permit. But you'll either need an employer willing to hire you or register your own business with your wife which halves the business registration requirements. Will still need 2million baht capital and at least 2 thai staff. Business must be 51+% thai owned on paper and you will still be restricted to what job title you can hold due to thai labor laws. Your current occupation is thai only here as it's a govt position.

Easier to get a retirement visa, less paper work than getting marry and getting marry visa. But with retirement visa, you can not get work permit.
Jeff *******
@Ning *****
It takes a couple of hours per year to sort out a marriage visa, which means no money in the bank and just 40k a month coming in, anyone who finds that difficult shouldn't be buying shoes with laces!
Ning ******
@Jeff ******
there is no financial requirement for female with thai husband, but it takes hours at the immigration.

@Ning *****
Per year - it's really not a hassle is it! I thought Thais were suppoed to be laid back. 😉
Colin *********
@Ning *****
it seems to me that a marriage visa is only hard for those who make it hard for themselves, by lack of forethought. Most documents required for extensions are the same every year, so making copies of those documents and keeping them for the next year saves time and effort. 'retirement' Visa has double the financial requirement than the marriage visa and that amount of money parked in a Thai bank account with very low interest rates, might be an important factor to some people.

You could come on a VOA, get married, and convert the visa to a marriage visa and reap the benefits you spoke of.

@Ali *****
I believe you have confused visa on arrival with visa exempt. Two very different things.
Ali ******
@Ken **********
yeah, that. True, it’s not a visa. It’s a stamp with an expiration date. That’s what I meant Dave. Thanks Ken for pointing out the difference. My suggestion doesn’t change.
Declan **********
Your options are dependent on a lot of things...

For work you will require a degree, without one you won't meet the requirements for any type of job. And the lost of requirements you and your employer must meet is quite long for a non-b and/or work permit.

As for visa options, you have non-O/OA retirement, DTV, Non-O marriage (when you're actually married), LTR, Elite Visa, I mean heck you could even get an ED-Visa of you really wanted...

Stating which one is best for you is impossible with the information you gave, it all entirely depends on your circumstances. And all of them have upsides and downsides, if you want more accurate information, you'll need to give us more information.

If you get a marriage visa then you can legally work, but you must first find an employer who will hire you and sponsor you for a work permit.

But it's highly unlikely to actually find a job in Thailand as a foreigner. The required minimum salary for a westerner is the same amount of money that it would cost to hire 3 or more Thais full time, and anyone that wants to hire a foreigner must prove to the labor department that they could not find a Thai that could do the same job.

There's also a very large list of jobs that reserved for Thais only.
