Hi I could do with people's help and advice on this I met my Thai wife I've just speaking to her for some time, and went to see her April 23 we spoke every day since unfortunately we was rejected on silly reasons for her visa to come here to the UK? 2nd February this year we got married to strengthen a relationship because of the outlay of the marriage in Thailand paying flight costs for family it only leaves me 3,000 in my account is this enough to get a visa for her to come for a little stay in the UK to meet the rest of the family I am hoping in the near future to retiring out their with her she got an agent who's supposed to be doing all the paperwork she keeps changing things from the money I gave my wife she has 5,000 UK. Put this Agent is telling her I still have to have more money in my account all I find is I had to earn, which I do over 18 and a half thousand am I missing something or am i being taken for a ride?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on the challenges and requirements for a Thai wife seeking a visa to visit the UK, particularly concerns over financial prerequisites and the role of visa agents. The original poster is unsure about the amount of money needed in their UK bank account to sponsor the visa, given that they have already experienced a visa rejection based on what they perceive as 'silly reasons.' Community responses primarily caution against reliance on agents, emphasizing that the wife may not need to exhibit significant funds of her own, as sponsorship criteria focus more on the husband's income. There are mentions of changes in visa regulations and expectations about proof of relationship and return to Thailand. Many users suggest proceeding with caution regarding financial commitments, with some expressing skepticism about the agent's practices.

Basically I would tell the agent and wife you have no money left leave it for a month and then see where you are at you will know in your own mind then
Martin *******
Does your wife have a job or own land etc in Thailand the visitors visa will look for something for her to return to Thailand you need evidence of your relationship etc .. and second I don't think £3000 is enough to retire in Thailand I think you need to open your eyes and stop living in a dream world
Paul *************
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Martin ******
again you misunderstood this well I've actually got the 6,000 to cover her coming for the month to the UK hopefully we can extend it a bit then I will make preparations to retire and go and live out there with her she has six square miles of farmland but they're getting income from but she also has her own profession job Which is where she said she could probably employ me to be a chauffeur so yeah I maybe want the lucky ones who's got lots of options a job role a wife and 56 so I can go for the retiring visa lol I just need to get our bloody government first to allow her to come and see the rest of the family
Martin *******
@Paul ************
if you get a retirement visa you can not be employed in Thailand I think a lot of people misunderstood as you had 2 different questions in one 😉 hopefully all works out for you

First and foremost you need to get your story straight!

Second of all you meet her family they’ll strip you of any saving for scores of fabricated reasons!!

Do not give a darn penny more!

If your new wife wants to come visit the UK!

Call uk immigration and get the requirements!

You do not need a Thai agent for a UK VISA!

In conclusion! Does your Thai wife have a real job and live on her own??

If you doesn’t little do you know but your here income provider!!

Wake up my friend!!

You found a viper that will destroy your retirement!!

Rule number one regardless from any country even the UK!

If your wife future wife is not financially independent!!

Run!

You’ll never win!

She trade you in for another sucker!!

That will throw money at her!

This stor is as old!

Wake up!!

thanks for your advice however my wife is quite famous over there she makes a good living in her job and as much as it is very rare she wants me to give up work and come live out there with her, I just want her to come and meet family & friends who could not come to our wedding in Thailand I told her from day one that after having a slight injury I gave up my engineering and do a very light not well paid job although it's true as you say traditionally and her family were a bit upset that I was not going to do a Dowry. In the end she told them she wanted to marry for love and not finance whether this is true only time can tell let's hope I found one of the good ones 🙏🙏

I find it crazy that even with the internet and all its forms of gathering information on all topics (forums, social media, YouTube, etc.) people still fall for this stuff. hi I did try to explain I only gave him the money that she will needed for her monthly payments like the car payment because she spent the month preparing and then looking after me and my family the agent told her was she needed to show lots of money then suddenly they changed that I had to show three thousand and then it jumped up to four thousand I'm not 100% sure I thought she was going for the married one then I was told she was going for the holiday one as people are suggested extending it a later date when here so technically shes not ask me for any more money only what the agent has said I think she is genuine probably one of the few reading from this lot I am not prepared to send any money and I found aware just having my banks statement originally does not give them away of taking the money out of mine. Hopefully it will all come to light in the next week to whether she's genuine or not as hopefully tomorrow if not Monday she will be taking the application in to get the visa so I will update everybody then

I'd just have my banking limits on withdrawal set to certain amount.

Just keep an eye on it if yr worried.

My friend works uk for few months each year to raise the money.

You can invite as tourist for family visit.

Give you time to save up and grow together and work out yr plans for future.

Beware though

Taken for a ride.. most agents take 10k baht then take the rest on visa approval.

I took my gf in July 2023 and I got a visa in 10 days solely on my money and biz in Thailand.

My gf owned the house and had a daughter here.

Visa was granted... she hated the UK lol.

A UK spouse visa can be difficult to obtain. To qualify, you and your Thai wife must meet the following requirements:

Have lived together for at least two years

Pass the Genuine Relationship Test

Meet the minimum income threshold

Have enough money to support yourselves and any dependents without claiming public funds

Have appropriate accommodation

Pass a health and criminal check

Pass an English language test

Be 18 years old or older

Have been legally married

Intend to live together permanently

Good Luck My wife and I did it, get a attorney on your side of the pond to help you. It's not going to be cheap but it can be done ,

Surely she could just book a return flight and come for a holiday , millions of people visit the UK every year for a holiday
Paul *************
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Roger ********
the government has clamped right down so they have to be a sponsor hence myself they're saying would need 4,000 in the bank to cover for the two weeks we are asking for although a visa is valid for up to six months which makes no sense they want us to show a return flight but if you want to stay longer it would cost me then to change the flight and that allowed to buy a one-way ticket and look at when she's ready to go home within the six months it's quite easy for her to go a lot of other places like us you don't need to apply for visa she gets a free 30-day one but to the UK government is clamping down
Mal *****
@Paul ************
that's not true anybody can visit the uk just need to prove they will not be a drain on government resources and they will not stay. I am married to a thai girl and when we go to the uk she just applies for a Visa for herself I dont sponsor her. We tried the sponsor route years ago and much easier if your wife just says she's single and wants a holiday. She will need to have around £150 per day in her bank, the visa is for 6 month but say she only coming for 10 days then change the flight china eastern is free to change. Also need to show that she will return to Thailand like having property, a job, family here. My wife has a separate bank account which she sends money to each month and named holiday fund so bank statements show this, her normal bank statements show her salary going in but never has money in at the end of the month but Visa not care about this as long as it looks like she can support herself and will return it's very simple
Ian ********
Does the agent mean you need more money in your account in the UK? If so he’s probably right and not a scam like all the experts on here are telling you. To get the visa you need to show you can support her in the UK, so money needs to be in your account not her’s.
Paul *************

@Ian *******
hi Ian yes this is what the problem is I was saving up the money, then the agent told us that they were going down a different path and it was Noi who would need the money, so she could support herself and come on holiday visa and not a married one, then suddenly three days later I'm told paperwork is all good I just have show a statement of 3,000 even though I had laid out extra and given her some money as she's not been working, when on the honeymoon 3 weeks ,then I asked has she put the visa in expecting her to follow me in a few days when I had to come home, after already losing a £600 return flight because you've delayed in paperwork and buying another 600 pound flight three days later, to then be told I've now got to show 4,000 in the account I don't think noi is conning me as she's in the public eye has near 5,000 followers and has plastered our wedding photos on Facebook I just questioned the agent keeps changing everything as someone had pointed out to maybe just over cautious and trying to guarantee it as we paid for that service

Your wife does not need money in her account (my wife had none)

You have to prove that you can support her financially

When I went through this my wages had to be over £18,500 this is going to rise to £29,000 in spring this year

In addition to my wage you will have pay a NHS surcharge which in my case was £1200 for the first visa application

You will also have to present plan of your living arrangements plan of house ownership or rented if rented rental agreement

It is a lot of paperwork including photos over the past years of you and you wife together proof dates travelling to Thailand over the past 2 years a the hotels you stayed at

It’s a long journey I went for the 5 years route

Which has now ended and my wife is a British citizen

I wish you well on your journey

Not sure if you will see the £5 k again but I hope so

It would appear that you she is seeking a "Standard Visitor Visa" to enter the UK for the purposes of a holiday.

According to the government website you can apply online on her behalf if they cannot apply for themselves.

1. The earliest you can apply is 3 months prior to departure.

2. Cost £115 for a standard visotr visa which permits a maximum stay of up to 6 months.

3. She will need to supply biometrics at the visa application center.

4. Proof is required to show that she will rerun n to Thailand e.g. employment, house, car or children etc

5. Evidence that she can support herself during her stay in the UK such as bank statements, payslips on so on or evidence from her sponsor which in this case will be you. You/her will need to detail what that financial support looks like i.e. you have sufficient funds (the website does not detail what 'sufficient' means in a figure sum. Detail your relationship, marriage certificate for example, perhaps emails or other correspondence you've shared. Your status as a UK citizen - copy of passport.

6. Return ticket.

7. Passport valid for the duration of her stay.

8. Outline an itinerary of her stay even if it's as simple as visiting your family.

There's no need for an agent to when you can do it by yourself for free.

You need to prove that you can support her when she visits the uk you do not need an agent to do this just write on form that you are happy to support here and give evidence by meats of a bank statements etc a return ticket a place to stay in England

They only refuse visa if they thing your partner will not return to Thailand she does not have to have a job just your support

And proof of relationship etc
Andy **********
@David *********
UK advises not to purchase tickets until after the visa is issued. The complication with jobs is that although the applicant might say they are coming fr a 2 week holiday, the visa is always issued for 6 months, then some civil servant will argue what employer gives 6 months holiday, and then they decide she will have no job to return to. So her ties to Thailand should not be just a job; does she have dependant children, elderly parents to support, property (a house, even a motorbike). They may also refuse if she has a record. eg for holiday visa, the immigration officer MUST refuse if she has served a 12 month or less sentence anywhere, less than 12 months before application (but they might refuse if more than 12 months has elapsed, there appears to be no rule for spent convictions). Proof of relationship in this case is a marriage certificate, which is a perfectly legal document in the UK. Yes, letters of invitation only need to include a statement that you will support and house her during her stay (documentary proof is always helpful). I see sometime reference to sending to the government private messages between people, but then, ECHR Article 8, which might not apply in the circumstance of migrating to the UK (ie. the government has a right to interfere in marriages, based on income) should not apply in the case of demonstrating proof of a legal relationship given there is a marriage certificate (the government can mind their own business about what I talk to my wife about)

Partner visa costs about £1500 (or a bit less) for the visa itself, and £1000 a year nhs surcharge up front for 2.5 years. Then rinse and repeat. On top, pay for english test (£100-200) and bangkok medical exam (£200 or so).

very expensive for a short holiday
Andy **********
@Steve ************
You misunderstand. There is the Partner (or Wife) visa, which is issued for 2.5 years, renew after 2.5 years, then afer 5 years, apply for permanent settlement/passport etc. The Visitor Visa is for a holiday, and the government fee is £115. As its for less than 6 months, no medical tests etc. As its a holiday, the visitor should have travel insurance, so no NHS surcharge. A Partner Visa includes a right to work as well. The visa fee is not refundable. The NHS fee is (if you get turned down). The UK government might interview an applicant (which is where an agent is of use).
Steve **********
@Steve ************
you're being duped !
Mal *****
Why are you using an agent if your wife just wants to go to the uk for a short tine then a tourist Visa is needed and thats all, no need for you to show anything, she has to show and prove that's she will return to Thailand. everybody's allowed a holiday so if she has money in her bank and a job why cant she just go on holiday no need for an agent or to prove you earn enough money or even that your married, no sponsor letter or anything, people think to deep when it comes to a Visa. Just tell your wife to apply on her own and say just a holiday. Very easy not all thai are in a relationship but travel to the uk

completely wrong. His wife is a long time friend of his long time Thai friends who live in UK. They introduced them..they talk every day..he went out there last year and they bonded. Its not a case of finding her on the Internet...all he was asking for is some honest advice but getting loads of abusive messages.
Mac *********
If you/he asks for feedback, you’ll get the good, the bad, and the ugly.

He presented the age-old love story that inevitably starts with demands for money in an unmarried/uncommitted long-distance relationship and says something doesn’t feel right! This story has been told 100,000 times here and on YouTube.

Thousands of guys recount their stories of having been fleeced and left with nothing. It’s a shame this narrative has cast a shadow on foreigners and Thai ladies, but that love story has been played repeatedly online, and from what I’ve read/heard, the movie is never anything like the book. 'Eyes Wide Open', not 'Wide Shut.'
Andy **********
You're not being taken for a ride. The agent is being super cautious. Most of them offer a guarantee, ie your money back or a free reapplication. They can't actually guarantee anything, and they know it. They're looking to belts and braces the application so they actually get paid without loss of face. I'm guessing the wife chose the agent, sometimes it's because the agent is also from Isaan, and for isaan ladies that's seen as more trustworthy than other thais. They think if you have more money in your uk account that will increase the chances of her getting a visa, and them being paid. Right now it seems, a lot of applications are being rejected. Keep the proposed visit short, letter of invitation factual. Frankly, if you are married it is none of the governments business to know how much you give her, beyond that you support her. Different if girlfriend. I think you are going to have to bide your time. It seems the main reason is for her to meet your extended family. It's a lot easier for them to go to thailand to visit.
Patricia **********
@Andy *********
thankyou for that kind reply. I am Paul's mother and I went to the wedding in Thailand...she is a lovely girl and they are good together...he just wants her to meet the rest of the family. Too many sceptical people on here. Its the constant changes from the agent that is confusing. I spoke to an embassy official who told me he needs to be earning 18k a year...which he does. So not sure why the agent can't just get on with it. They are in love...its easy to see.
Andy **********
@Patricia *********
The embassy official might be thinking that he wants his wife to move to the UK. At the moment the income requirement is £18,600. This increases to £29,000 on April 1st (
****************************************************************************************
I would not be surprised if there are further tweaks before then. The embassy official was talking about the policy now. The agent is driven by the need to be paid, and with most, that's related to a visa being successful.some will offer a refund, others will roll over the fee into a new application. They don't have a magic way of guaranteeing a visa, but they should be able to get a sense of the lie of the land. Right now, it's more difficult for first timers. A cynic says the home office is driven by targets, and it's easier to refuse the low hanging fruit (wives, there has been cases of thai wives self deporting after some arbitrary decision. A friend who is Malaysian and a consultant surgeon in the nhs was threatened with 10 days notice of deportation because he had the temerity to ask permission to attend a wedding back home, during the period he was applying for indefinite leave to remain (cost him thousands to fight the decision). But people voted for this cruel system. You're brave to post on this group because there are a few thoughtless idiots.

If you are looking to get a non-o visa based on marriage in Thailand you need to have 400k baht in a Thai bank account in your name only. This is why the agent is talking about £4000. You also need 400k Thai baht in your account for 2 full calendar months before applying for a 12 month extension of stay, once you've received the extension you can do what you want with the money but will need to go back up to 400k again 2 months before the next extension. Stay clear from agents you don't need them. Have you been supporting her monthly? You can get her bank statements to prove this. You will need to prove you can support her for her visit to the uk. Some money in the bank and or your salary coming in. Your residence papers in the uk to show where she will be staying. And a big reason for her to return to Thailand after her visa expires this is important. You don't say why you're first application failed because this can have a big bearing on any future applications

thanks for the advice yes the reason it we failed I was cautious so I sent them a bank account thinking it was to prove that I was real for her, but if I was being scammed there was just a thousand in there plus as she works online, and I just moved into a property address details didn't match up
David **********
You find the agent... and do a little background check on them... ask people what agents are best... never let her be the middle person unless your both present!!
Judy *******
I don’t think you have enough money in the UK to get your wife there. I think you have to show you have at least 29,000 GBP rising soon to 38,000 GBP, plus suitable accommodation. Where did you get married?
Darren ******
@Judy ******
that is from Spain , not Thailand... I had one night hotel booked and got a visa.
Gordon *******
18.5 k minimum income just now but rising to 38K at some point come spring , also now you have to pay international health surcharge when getting spouse visa so that’s another 2K on top of visa fee 🙄 (get to to Calais and onto a boat , she’ll get a nice house & benefits without jumping through hoops & spending a fortune if only we could eh )
John ********
@Judy ******
He does say for a little stay, one can read that anyway they want, but you'd imagine he means for a short while. A Thai can get a visa that allows them to stay in the UK for upto six months in any one year. Thailand doesn't offer a tourist visa that allows you six straight months stay.
John ********
@Judy ******
Those figures are only if you want to bring your other half to the UK to live. Nothing to do with visiting.
Paul *******
@Judy ******
At the moment it is 18,600 pounds you must earn a year on 11 April this year it will go up to 29,000 then subsequently going up in the end I think to 37,000 or 38,000 pounds per year so as long as the application is done before the increase it will only have to be earning 18,600 you must show2000 pounds in your bank account along with all the other documentation that they require
Andy **********
Its only changed for partner visa. No change for visitor visa.
Judy *******
@Andy *********
if she goes in on a visitor visa then she still has to meet certain requirements

***********************************
Andy **********
@Judy ******
Well, Duh. And the list of vistor requirements for a standard visit isn't that long. No one is stating that the UK has no requirements of visitors.
Paul *************

@Andy *********
so if she's not coming here permanently just visit him then I don't have to be on 38,000 even if now my wife? Well I suppose that's one good thing of I've heard today everything else, has been negative lol
Andy **********
@Paul ************
There is no salary requirement for the sponsor. You are just stating you will undertake to cover her expenses during the visit. Now of course, providing evidence to back up that statement will help their decision. In the application, she has to state how much she thinks the trip will cost. Do you have the money or means to cover that, eg the flight (£1000-1500), accomodation (you are providing that), subsistance. Has your wife traveled before, and if so, did she have any problems? That might be a difficult conversation, getting things into the open. The UK may ask about the last 10 years of travel. It might be an idea to build your savings back up again, next time you go out, go on a budget, not stay in a fancy resort etc. Thai people hate the sun anyhow, so its not like you will be going for a beach holiday.....

thanks Sunday yes this is what I'm going to do I sent an introduction inviting letter once before and this time obviously stating she is now my wife and I've been there showing the two stamps of my trips and my bank statements showing this Plus I stated that I was buying the flight I happen told I can't just buy the one way as I was hoping she could stay a bit longer on the next tension and then I would have some holiday leave entitlement again, and I could fly back with her in July type of thing but I put a thousand pound to one side for the flight thanks again for the help & advice
Andy **********
@Paul ************
No law against using your flexible friend to pay for a flight. My wife has a black mark against her after traveling to Malaysia. A British agent told me to lie....... A Thai agreed this was a terrible idea. I think UK and Australia regulations are not so different. Why was she in Australia? Short holiday? Family there?

This group is really hard to ask advice on. Its full of divorcees who meet prostitutes in Thailand, and think that's normal, and base their responses on their own dysfunctional, beer-sozzled lives. For a partner visa, besides the onerous salary requirement, medical tests and language exams, you need to thick end of £5000, just for 2.5 years, and of that, ~£1500 you won't get back if turned down.

we got married in Thailand on the second hence the flights for me and my parents the wedding cost the monks the photographer the marriage license and the British Embassy to prove I was eligible to marry? I was told I don't need to show when speaking to the embassy earning over eighteen and a half thousand which I clearly do been in the job over two years I'm just been told I'm going to be getting a 3% pay rise as I do a brilliant job I believe you're referring to this new restriction on the 4th of march where it going up to 38,000 but I was assuming that was if you wanted the permanently bring a partner in to the UK full-time as someone pointed out I don't have the funds to retire out there full-time so my option as I'm 56 looking at one of those retiring visas and trying to do six months UK 6 month Thailand maybe I actually secured a property bigger than than the last place for her to come last year as I said things didn't go to plan

I have been doing 6 months here 6 months UK since 2009

Been married 14 years and my Wife has been multiple times back to UK

on a 6 month visa with me, we do the paperwork together

The rules on income have changed this year for Foreigners to stay permanently , and on your income you will not qualify

In your case I think you should start again as you have been refused once

A good agent with good reviews is what you need , dealing through your wife is not a good idea as she may not understand fully what the requirements are

Best of Luck
Ady ******
@Judy ******
unless the rules have changed you dont need money in a Uk bank you just have to show you earn over £18k a year and have suitable accomadation

it changed recently, plus not sure he is really married as they’ve only ‘talked’

Firstly it is easy enough for you to do yourself. Agents just cost you money. The only thing you need to prove is that you can support you and your wife with your income in the UK. You can have zero in the bank account but you will need to show last 6 months accounts from memory.

Be careful with the word silly reasons. A rejection is a rejection.

thank you Neil the reply, yes originally I was being cautious I just sent them a bank statement with not a lot in in case they try to rip me off, since then as I said we've spoken every day three times a day and then I went out as she told me that this agent said it would strengthen it if we were married I thought of it helped strengthen the case then why not as she does make me feel really good especially when we together I'm now finding it doesn't seem to have made a difference which is why I'm starting to question it as people are say ?
Wayne ******
@Paul ************
being Married has no bearing on the Visa ...as it states for the UK ...she can be just your girlfriend...spouse or civil partner .

You should always start with a 6 month visitor visa ..maybe do that twice ...most importantly is you show she has a reason to go back to Thailand...ie good job...house ...children ...get a letter from her employer stating how.long she worked there .

Don't transfer any more money...you need to show you UK balance ...she doesn't need any money as you are her sponsor .

Paul King is someone that I trust .

But I've done 3 visitors visa....2 visa for 2.5 years and the life in the UK for my wife so she now has ILR and next is a British passport ....it all takes time ...and you need to give MORE INFO THAN THEY ASK FOR ...

BUT...the most important thing is ...your bank balance and a strong reason why she will return to Thailand
Robin ********
After paying out you have £3000 in your account and your planning on retiring over here soon . Dream on mate .
John ********
@Robin *******
£3000 = 135,000 THB. 20,000 for agent for visa 'O' retirement, plus before he goes to live there he'll probably of saved enough maybe to get an 'O' visa based on marriage with 400,000 in his Thai bank account, then no problem. I think he's a bit confused.

Think your been took for a ride she doesn’t have to have any money in her account when I took my wife to the Uk it was all about what I earnt and had to prove I sent reguler money to her and send many photos of us together to prove we was in a relationship
Taz **********
@Ady *****
not sure about the UK but Australia has 2 options.

1 is as you said, you can sponsor them to visit (tourist visa)

So immigration look at your finances ect, to see that you can financially support them.

2, Thai nationals can apply for a tourist visa themselves to visit Australia, besides other requirements, the financial requirement is that they can show they have at least $5,000 AUD in their bank account & it has to have been in their account for minimum of 6 months prior to their application.

So from what the OP has written I’m thinking they are somehow trying to apply showing she can financially support herself to visit the UK.

thanks for your reply yes it's like we are saying you had to show sending her money that is the money she has now in her account so I'm about background down in flights and wedding cost she does have a good job and earns well there so I don't think it it's her more this agent changing things and not putting the application in ?
Keith ********

get rid of the agent , start slow , get her a tourist visa to start

you have to show reguler money sent to her over the months or years you have been together and a one of payment of 5k won’t stick you have most likely never see that 5k again

I am confused with your question.

You have given agent 5000 pounds through your wife ?

Is it for visa for her to UK or you to here ?
Paul *************

@Michael *******
to show that she could support herself what he earns herself she could not spend on the wedding so she could show that she could have a good bank balance I just topped it up and paid her outgoing for the three weeks we were there and she was not working so just trying to give the facts that combined we would have eight thousand pounds I have paid this agent 300 deposit another 200 when complete it's just that they tell me I have to do certain things I do it and then they've added something else last time I had to show 3000 now they're saying no I need to show 4000 so they've not put the application form in case it fails again
John ********
