What options does my mom have to extend her stay in Thailand after her tourist visa?

Hi all

My mom will be traveling from South Africa to Thailand around April. 🤞🏼🇿🇦🇹🇭

She plans to get a tourist visa (60 days) before leaving SA. I believe she can do one extension once here.

Is there any way she can stay longer? My husband is Thai and we are legally married. I’m currently on a non B Visa.

Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about visa options for their mother, who will travel from South Africa to Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa. The conversation reveals that the mother can potentially extend her stay with one extension of her tourist visa and suggests obtaining a Non-O visa if she is over 50, which would allow her to stay longer as the parent of a foreigner in Thailand.

How old is she? How long does she want to stay? What is the main purpose of her stay? on and on. Too many vague points for you to get decent advice.

These are general types of visas. You can check these to see what visa she qualifies for and meets her purpose of stay.

Thanks. Happy to provide more info now that I know what’s needed.

She is 59 years old. She would like to stay a minimum of 6 months, if she is able to stay longer she will. I am expecting our second child, so I need her here to help and love on her grand kids.

Thanks for the link. I’ll go check it out. Appreciate the help and clarification.

, If she can meet the financial requirement for Non-O being over 50 or Non-OA, I recommend getting one of those.

Or see how the traveling around neighboring countries when she makes her trip a few months later, maybe METV could be one of the choices.

Seeing you are expecting a newborn baby, I'm not so keen to recommend it to you while as Benjamin says Non-O dependant to Non-B holder is one of the good options if your employer agrees.

WIth Non-O dependant to you, that means you have to be next to her at the immigration office when she applies for a visa/extension because you are the reason for her visa/extension. YOU, no other family member, have to be there, and doesn't matter you are in labor or your newborn baby is sick.

Or if you happened to quit your job, her extension is invalid with yours. (while you have a choice to be on Non-O marriage, she may not have many options)

You may want to consider these parts, too.

Thanks again for the helpful advice.

I might approach my employer and ask if they are willing to help.

If I switch over to a Non-O am I still permitted to work?

you can hold work permit and work when you are on Non-O being married to a Thai national.

(But When you are on Non-O marriage, your mother cannot be Non-O to you.)

>Is there any way she can stay longer?

It depends, what age is your mother? If she's over 50, I recommend for her to get a Non-O visa based on being a parent of a foreigner who is inside Thailand. She would be able to stay in Thailand for 90 days, and then get a One Year Extension of Stay Based on Being a Parent to a Foreigner in Thailand with a Non-immigrant Visa. There is no financial requirements for this extension of stay.

, and if you want her to go on this, YOU need to get your employer to agree to support your mother's Non-O first.
