TLDR : Answer Summary
Being legally married to a Thai national does allow for longer stays in Thailand through a Non-O visa specifically based on marriage. The discussion emphasizes that while marriage may provide a means to extend one's stay, there are also various other visa options available for individuals looking to remain in Thailand long-term. These options include retirement and student visas. The conversation also touches on the importance of having sufficient financial resources and making decisions carefully regarding marriage and investments in Thailand.

Just remember, if you leave your country for good and stop paying taxes you will never see a government pension or social security. You will be working in Thailand until either the day you die or can’t work anymore. At that point you will see who will put they’re hand out to you. So play it safe Adam.

Seriously.

There are really many options to stay longer in Thailand without marriage.

Please consider seriously.

It's like shopping. Easy to buy. Extremely hard to "Refund".

jump to conclusions much? I've spent 10 years in Thailand and seen shit the OP would never dream would happen. The fact that he's already supporting 2 families in the village and ready to invest in a business for them is sign enough that he's fucked. Getting married will only amplify his problems. Setting the standard for the village that you're their bank is a recipe for disaster. This will not end well. Trust me.

Adam, this man (Dario) is talking sense.. do what you please. There’s bad women in every country, if you have got a good one then go for it, there’s always gonna be some bitter people trying to put you off where they have failed. Your life your choices. But be smart in your thinking and planning as you would be at home. I wouldn’t change my wife who is Thai for anyone else in the world. All the best 🙏🏽

, I have married Thai (twice, sigh...) and it didn't work out. But that was not due to duplicity or failings on their part. The faults were mostly mine. There was no shafting at the dissolution, and now years later, no hard feelings. We remain cordial. Follow your heart and your head, not the advice of embittered farang. No offense meant to anyone here. I was thinking of cranky Brits in Pattaya I know.

Thank you again. I’m not going to cash all my chips in in Thailand, but I am going to try and build a life there. So many people have told me not to marry a Thai girl, not to live in Thailand, don’t build a home, don’t start a business......if I listened to all those people I would never leave my home country.....I know there are numerous horror stories of people getting shaffted by their gf’s/wife or business partner and most of those stories are probably true, but I have to take a chance on building my life their....if it all goes wrong, I can come home and move on.

Then again, I have had 30% return on condo sales over the past 7 years. And as an American, thanks to the 1833 treaty, we get some special concessions here in doing business. Until a certain orange-hued clown queers our deal.

you are welcome. As a retiree in Thailand 12+ years now I have seen many situations. Best to keep flexible vs tied down.

the rental market is a paradise for renters. Keep your $$$ in your home country. Gives you maximum flexibility for you in future.

Neros Mloh I have a partner and I was asking if I could stay longer when married.
James ********
Yes. You should think about doing that. An apartment or a condo in your own name gives you something to call your own. And puts you on the map. For a visa think about student or retirement options. No reason to get married for the visa. Good luck!

Thanks again, I had thought about buying an apartment in my name....still may do that

More so here, Sir.

Rent property and never get married.

Those are my words of advice.

Thank you James. I’m generous for sure and hope they would do the same for me, I can never be 100% sure though....I lost my home and it’s belongings in this country; nightmare scenarios happen in the UK as much as Thailand I guess.

@Ja***
... Wise, wise words.
James ********
Yes, but you have to think, for a little moment, how those people would help you out, if you had nothing, and needed support, and I guess they wouldn't be so quick to change their marriage status to help you. So give generously, but make sure you have your eyes wide open.

Quite right. I help to support two families in the village I stay at and want to stay longer so I can help them start up a little business....would be nice to live there full time to be with my fiancé but I have to come back to work to earn decent money....but if the business can tide me over.....
Tony *********
Yes

So I could stay longer than the usual tourist visa would allow?
Robert ********
There is no law stating a maximum time a foreigner may stay in Thailand on back-to-back tourist visas, although it is now becoming increasingly more difficult.
