The problem is that Thais have a reputation for overstaying , working illegally, not just in aus or USA but Uk too. In the uk it is estimated that 40% of Thais on tourist visas abused that status. Then the Uk crackdowned and the visa rejection rates are very high. The criteria is much stricter.

wrong. You’re a Thai citizen if you have a passport. You can be resident in Thailand with a non Thai passport, like many people are that reside here over 180 days in a calendar year. I’m resident according to immigration , tax and revenue, the government hospital and my local amphur who issued my pink ID.
