Many of the schools don't care whether you attend or not. However, there is always the risk that the immigration officer will test your Thai. They've tightened things up from when I first arrived. So, if you go the ED route and you really want to stay, you're going to need to attend classes. If you can't afford the classes, you're out of options.

I am responding to Brooke Schneider. He said invest 800k in US bank. It's not possible. Deposit must be in Thai bank.

The 800k baht must be in a Thai bank. I'm confused when you say invest the 800k in a US bank and earn interest. How?

12 years ago, I was in your shoes. I am $10k lighter now, for nothing. This is the first rule of Thailand: don't send money from your home country.

You can update your bankbook on one day. It will show all historical transaction. I did that. But IO also wanted to see a signed printout of formal letter from bank, with bank stamp. I used SCB and had no problems. But, I'm not in CM.

You can extend a tourist visa within Thailand one time at immigrations. You'll get 30 more days for sure.

Answer is yes. 1900 baht, I believe. Do it at immigrations.
