Hello everybody 🙂

My Girl just arrived in Bangkok this Morning with her TR Visa, she visited Thailand for about 8 Months from 2022 to April 2023, now the Guys at the Immigration at the Airport pulled her out and told her she has to Book a flight back Home cause she did Border Runs on her Last visit.. they ve discussed a little and then told her to pay 2000 Baht, have her the Extension so she now can stay 90 days but told her she has to leave Thailand After 90 days and she Not allowed to do a Border Run!

Does somebody here can Tell me what happened there? Will she get Problems if she ll do a Border run in 90 days? Cause she would like to stay longer in Thailand…

Best of wishes,

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user reports that his girlfriend, who recently entered Thailand on a TR Visa, was told at immigration that she had to return home due to her history of multiple border runs during her previous stay. She was given a 90-day extension after paying 2000 Baht but was warned not to attempt another border run. The community discusses the implications of her situation, the tightening of border run rules, and the importance of securing the appropriate long-term visa to avoid issues with immigration.
Leighton ********
Usually if you do the TR visa applications and not just border hopping then they wont have a problem.

As long as you spend money and go through the regular TR visa process each time then they dont usually care. Just dont be hopping back and forth and not bringing the TR board revenue.

Also they prefer to see flights to a different country and a flight back in vs doing Land Border Hops
Kratos ******
Just fly out and re-enter. Get the correct longstay visa and no issues. You can beat a system but for so long, then take more of a risk of getting flagged or blacklisted
Patrycja ********
Lol just pay those 200 usd to get a multiple entry TR, and there's no problem... why being cheap?
Oliver ********
I doubt an 8-month visit nearly a year ago would raise any particular concerns, unless it included a period of overstay.

Sometimes (rarely and randomly) the border officers just ask to see evidence of a flight out of Thailand for foreigners entering without long-term visas - so it's worth booking a flexible flight and/or being ready to book something quickly if asked.

To avoid future problems, she could get multi-entry tourist visas, and when doing a "border bounce" always spend a while outside the country - people who are in a rush to get back in raise suspicions of working illegally.
Terary **********
The ''she dunno" was the cause of her problems. I have a questionable visa history. Don't listen to these other people in this group, Thailand is very flexible about who they let it. But they do randomly pull people aside and ask for further documentation and it's best to have that documentation.

Nationality is a big factor also.

Thank you for this helpfull answer, she aint ever had a overstay in thailand..

I guess she had to Pay this 2000 Baht because she was asked on arrival how Long she will stay and she told em she dunno and had no flight back Home.. Immigration Forced her then to pay the 2000 and told her she shouldnt do border run and no Extension so they told her she gonna have to leave After her 60 day TR Visa…

But why they told her she shouldnt Go for Extension?
Jonathan **************************
It's unusual this happened after she spent over half a year outside of the country, but this still serves as a teachable moment regarding staying here on border hops and tourist visas.

"But I know (person) who stayed here for two or three years on tourist visas and/or bounces", "So, what, it just depends on the whims of the IO?", "But, I haven't broken any laws or rules".

Yep, yep, and yep. That's basically how it works. There are no written, fixed rules or policies on how long someone can be here on short-term stays (apart from no more than two land entries per calendar year).

The answer to the question of "how long can I stay here on short-term stays" is, basically, you can keep doing it until you can't any longer.

When the "can't any longer" time comes will vary from person to person, and will depend on which immigration officer you get in front of you.

But eventually the point will come where they look at your history and say "no more", and sadly, this seems to have arrived for her now.

Visa run This is when the tourist visa that the Immigration stamps upon entering the country is about to expire. Foreigners who still want to stay in Thailand will travel out of Thailand via the border such as Aranyaprathet, and then return back in again on the same day. Thai Immigration at the border There will be a stamp to continue staying in Thailand. The period of time spent in Thailand How many days will depend on each race?

But from now on, Immigration will be more strict. That is, if anyone has a history of entering and exiting Thailand has crossed the border so many times that it seems unlikely that this is normal for tourists. Immigration officials have the right to not allow entry into the country. In the news, it is said that they will consider it on a case-by-case basis.

It's like the law hasn't changed. Just take the existing laws. But let's take it more seriously. Let foreigners apply for the correct type of visa to enter the country. Because most foreigners with visas run Won't be a tourist is coming to work in Thailand

We were told at the passport/immigration center in Banhkok that they no longer issue more than 60 days including the initial 30 on arrival. After that we can only get another 7 days. Total, 67 days. We could have had a longer visa if we had applied for it in Canada at the Thai Embassy.

Hardly the immigration crime of the century, give them a break. There's people with 1000+ days overstay out there, some with criminal charges, others working illegally for years, some of these with serious criminal charges in there home countries, using Thailand as a hideaway, and your busting this girls balls for what ? I think any immigration rules would be there regardless of this couple, or any number of offenders....do you think there would be no rules if there was never any offenders ?
Henrik *****
When trying to misuse the visasystem, and conststantly trying to stay as a tourist, when obviously not being a tourist, then at some point the Immigration will say stop.

Probably if she had a returnticket, (and not only a onwardticket to a neighboring country ) as it is known you should have when entering Thailand, the the system wouldn’t have flagged her to a serious talk et the immigration.
Rene ******
@Henrik ****
how does the system know that you have a return ticket?
Henrik *****
They could ask you simply.
John *********
@Henrik ****

Neal *******
@John ********
I think you might be right, HOWEVER, if someone is deliberately trying to screw the immigration system, they should have the extra precaution handy. Thai immigration doesn’t do favors for people. Their function is to stop people from attempting to live here without proper documentation, trying to pass as tourists. A return ticket to my home country is more credible than a cheap ticket out on a low cost airline or a completely bogus airline ticket.
Henrik *****
You have to be able to show that you intend to leave Thailand within the visascheme you enter Thailand on, and that is done by having a returnflight or onwardticket.

You may even get rejected at check-in in your departure airport.

Jonathan **************************
@Matthew *********
If you read the post, she already had a visa, and was trying to enter after 8 months outside TH.

You're not fooling anyone by staying a week in Kuala Lumpur.

Also, visa in your passport or not, entry is *always* at the discretion of the immigration officer in front of you. Having a visa is *not* a guaranteed entry ticket.

Also, there is no such thing as a 90-day tourist visa. There are 60-day visas, with the option to extend 30 further days.
Matthew **********
@Jonathan *************************
*Jesus. She's literally saying "did a border run last time" then talk of a border run next time. So I did read it.

Secondly, there is a world of difference between applying for a 60+30 visa at a Thai Embassy and turning up at the border. Theyask for accommodation proof etc. Completely different thing

Thirdly, we know it's 60 days 30 extention. That's not the problem here. If she can get the 60 then the extra 30 is easy and virtually guarenteed. Nobody needs to point this out

Fourthly, don't bother replying ,I won't get it anyway as blocked you for being a tool.

As I understand it, there is no published rule regarding the number of visa exempt entries allowed through airports, however does not imply that the airport entries are unlimited. Most legitimate sources of information will warn us that interpretation is at discretion of the immigration officer. Officers at land borders may deny entry to someone that hasn’t done their two allotted land entries based upon air entries and other factors.

what does reset on 1st Jan is the land border bounce count. Also, while immigration at the airport gave her a lecture about doing border bounces, that doesn't mean she won't be able to do them, many land borders just go by that rule and don't consider passport history. It's the airport that looks at that. The airport will see it though the next time, which could cause more problems.

You're talking about the Poi Pet border, which is a special case. They're notorious for indiscriminately rejecting many if not most, including people who are obviously genuine tourists, with recent stays in numerous SE Asian countries. Poi Pet is universally regarded as *the* border to avoid at *any* cost.

Also, the border guards and local Cambodian mafia there appear to have a scam going; there have been numerous accounts of people walking dejectedly away from the checkpoint - and then wouldn't you know it, out of nowhere, two local lads appear. "Oh, you got rejected? No problem! We know people at the checkpoint, for a fee of X, we can get you through!".

Laos/Myanmar border posts will reject if you have 2 land entries already (unless you have a visa). They will let you in otherwise. The 2 visa exempt land entries per year is a real published rule and they do enforce that. It's just that that is the only thing they consider, they don't look through your history like the airports do.
Thomas *******
@Nick ******
, no, but wish it was that easy,....far from correct though.
Brandon ************
@Nick ******
there is no 180 day rule. Every entry to Thailand is at the discretion of the immigration officer and your entire past history is right there for them to see on the computer.

So… the no more than 90 days in a 6 month period rule is not real? (Americans) I read that on the embassy website so thought it was legitimate.
Ivan ************
@Nick ******
it's not a law but it's obviously a rule of thumb used by immigration. That it's on multiple embassy websites as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, does suggest it's more than just something each individual IO thought up on the spot, it does seem to be quasi-official internal rule of thumb that came from above. People saying it doesn't exist are right insofar as it's not a law though.
Brandon ************
@Ivan ***********
do you have a link to this on the MFA website? I've seen it on a couple of embassy sites but not the MFA site.
Brandon ************
@Nick ******
no it's not a real rule. There's no rules about # of entries allowed (by air) or number of days allowed. But the passport control officers aren't going to let people stay indefinitely without a long term visa.

John **********
Couple of things.

1. You don't say what passport she holds which is important.

2. I think something is lost in translation, I've never heard of airport immigration issuing an extension. Are you sure they didn't say she can get an extension but it will be at an immigration office. A photo of the stamp she received would help avoid confusion.

3. They will likely have flagged her in the database so she will struggle with further entries. If she wants to stay longer I'd suggest she should use a border run company, they will only take her if they can get her back in and will assess her history before taking her
Viola ********
@John *********
I just want to add on the last point. Cause I had a pretty deep experience with Thai immigration system.

They don’t flag anyone in the system unless you get a ban.

A ban you can get if you overstay more than 3 months. If you don’t overstay there are no official orders to put you on the black list and they only can reject your entry for a few official requirements you don’t fit: not enough money(
*****
thb cash), your purpose of visit does not match with the visa you apply ( tourist), your length of stay is longer than can be considered, you don’t have a ticket out of the country and no proof of accommodation. I think , I listed all of the requirements.

Ah, the important part is when they ask you about a job. NEVER tell them you will work remotely. It’s gonna be counted like you will work in the country.

The immigration has a very strict requirement list , they ask you many questions and you should answer correct ✅ so they can’t reject you 😊
John **********
@Viola *******
all good points. But I'd say being flagged on the system is not the same as being blacklisted. A blacklist means you're done and dusted, you won't be allowed to enter for any reason, but being flagged is more gentle. If you have the usual requirements you list it does make it much harder to refuse you
Viola ********
@John *********
yeas, I listed it cause I have been rejected once. Now I know how it all works. I just tell you there are no special “flagging”, they just can give you a rejection stamp and you can go to another border. Or only black list. And with a black list there is no chance to get in( all agencies know it), yes, that’s we agreed 😅😅🤗

There are things to complain about Thailand, but this not one of them. It is those who abuse the system by trying to outsmart it that causes problems for everyone else.
Viola ********
@Neal ******
just curious how does it affect you some visa runners issues ? 😏
Neal *******
@Viola *******
Fortunately it doesn’t affect me directly because I have a non -o and am about to do extension #4. But I get frustrated at those who deliberately test the system and plead ignorance or complain about the immigration laws here. Many foreigners apparently feel as though they should be entitled to stay in Thailand unconditionally.
Wayne *****
@Blade *******
well don't come to a place that has third world shit buddy, your choice.
Bonnie *********
@Blade *******
Then why come back if you hate it so much? Sounds like you’re angry that the world doesn’t do what you want.

Does your home county allow others to do what you’re doing?
Blade ********
@Bon***
the law says there is no maximum stay per your or whatever on visa exemption. So why are the immigration officers breaking the law by rejecting people with false claims like not enough money because of too much visa exemptions / border bounces? 🤡
Frank **********
@Blade *******
stay in your country then Bozo.
Blade ********
@Fr***
no.. 😘

Just a bunch of complainers who don't get it Bonnie. You can't install common sense into some clowns.

Everyone suffers from abusing the system. Ed visas are a prime example.
Neil ******
@Kevin ******
I’m on meds because selfish assholes like to constantly violate and abuse immigration laws and then get upset when they are denied entry?

he didn’t seem upset in his post.

Graham ******
She has been identified as having a history of staying in Thailand using Tourism entry stamps and not getting a long-term Visa. Looks like she will be denied any future entry without a long-term Visa if this has been entered into the system.
Julie *******
@Graham *****
hopefully.
Johnny ******
@Graham *****
and quite right too.
Neil ********
@Graham *****
agree with that. Clamping down on abuse of the system for sure. Should just get the right visa for your stay
James **********
Looking like she abused the system and maybe had an overstay? You are not very clear about the facts.
Rene ******
What stamp(s) did she get? 1 for 90 days or 2 for 60+30?
Duncan *******
If she enteted on a single entry tourist visa, how did she get it without a ticket out of Thailand?
Ken ********
@Duncan ******
some airlines don't require one
Donna ************
@Duncan ******
exactly that. Applications for tourist visa require copies sent of exit flights .. feel there’s only part of a story with this post.
Rob *******
Donna ************
@Rob ******
perhaps just one that slipped through 🤷‍♀️ I apply from the UK too and always have been asked to submit exit flight info too.
Rob *******
@Donna ***********
it asked, but i never sent it because i dont have one, i just sent my flight there & it was accepted
Donna ************
@Rob ******
🤷‍♀️ and did you not get asked by airline to show exit flight? Or immigration? Do you travel to Thailand regularly?
Rob *******
@Donna ***********
Nobody ever asked, been here since november, no my second time in 4 years
Donna ************
@Rob ******
it seems a hit or miss then. I lived there for 2 years and travelled around SE Asia for 6 months and was always asked for exit flights in every country by the airlines. You must have an honest face 😊
Rob *******
@Donna ***********
Mine didn’t
Donna ************
@Rob ******
which country did you apply from ?
Ekkehard *******
@Duncan ******
Passengers with a valid visa don't have to show a return ticket at checkin.
Andrew *******
@Duncan ******
often they don't ask for proof of onward travel ...although some airlines will ask at check-in . Doesn't appear to be any rules regarding this ....but can be very frustrating after waiting at check in to be told u need onward flight
Rob *******
@Duncan ******
I have been in Thailand since November, when i applied for my Evisa (UK) i only showed my flight to Thailand & it was accepted. i had no onward travel
Henrik *****
But when obviously tring to exploit the visasystem, the onwardticket will be a good excuse to reject the tourist.
Duncan *******
@Rob ******
Interesting - I had thought they needed a ticket out, but it has been years since I applied for one.
Andy ********
@Duncan ******
it's normally the airlines that ask for the return ticket but I've never been asked in 5 years
John ********
@Andy *******
My GF was asked at BBK. So it does happen
Rob *******
If she is not allowed to do a border bounce can she do a visa run ?
Lien ******
@Rob ******
what's the difference?
Rob *******
@Lien *****
you need to look on your country’s entry requirements for thailand
Rob *******
@Lien *****
visa will give you 60 days that you can extend in thailand for 30 days, border bounce will give you 30 days that you can extend by 30
Lien ******
@Rob ******
so after 90 days I have to leave and then apply for visa again to get 90 days?
Rob *******
@Lien *****
you would apply for a tourist visa at the thai embassy in a border country that would give you 60 days, you could extend that in thailand by 30 days
Lien ******
@Rob ******
oh ok, so basically repeat the process. How often can you repeat the process?
Rob *******
@Lien *****
Border bounce is where you exit a country & re-enter to get stamped in, visa run is where you go to another country & apply for a visa
Lien ******
@Rob ******
oh ok, thanks for explaining it to me. What's the most common method?
Rob *******
@Lien *****
probly border bounce
Lien ******
@Rob ******
oh ok, but which one gives me more days to stay in Thailand? I'm super new to this. Wanna get info before making decisions. Definitely will visit first but I think it's good to know what my options are between vietnam and thailand
Jay *****
Advise to get a proper long term visa instead of just doing border run.
Tyler *******
@Blade *******
smart visa doesn’t have an age requirement.
Ken *********
@Blade *******
ED visa still exists.
Blade ********
@K**
okay that's the most reasonable one. But still you need to do and pay for the education. 😅
Ken *********
@Blade *******
Many of the schools don't care whether you attend or not. However, there is always the risk that the immigration officer will test your Thai. They've tightened things up from when I first arrived. So, if you go the ED route and you really want to stay, you're going to need to attend classes. If you can't afford the classes, you're out of options.
Blade ********
@K**
I personally like to travel around. All the time in Thailand would be boring for me. But I would like when the by the new government proposed 90 day visa exemption finally comes. 😅
Ken *********
@Blade *******
Maybe they'll propose a cannabis visa.
Blade ********
@K**
looks like the opposite. 😬

Well then I have even less need for a long term visa. 😅

***************************************************************************************************
*******
/10/asia/thailand-cannabis-reverse-proposed-laws-intl-hnk/index.html
Ken *********
@Blade *******
This simply means you'll need to pay 10,000 baht every 3 months for a medical "license." It's not a done deal yet, and it's a very stupid move. We'll still be able to get cannabis with additional hoops, and costs. "Hello, I have back pain. Trust me. Here is my 10,000 baht medical fee."
Blade ********
@K**
oh the usual falang rip off. 🤮😅
Don *****
@Blade *******
there’s plenty. People just don’t seem to understand that illegal immigration is a thing in Thailand. Abusing the process with these runs is cutting out of the governments economy and they really don’t like it. Play ball and spend 1000 dollars on a visa service for a year.
Lien ******
@Don ****
what type of visa will it provide? I'm looking for options
Karina ****
@Lien *****
Ed visa.
Don *****
@Lien *****
they’ll get you an education visa but when you use a service you are helping them out in turn you don’t have to actually learn Thai or go to in person classes they’ll fix it all up for you.
Lien ******
@Don ****
I would like to learn Thai if I stay there long term. Could you message me more details please. Thanks
Jay *****
@Blade *******
if you got the money you are able to stay long term without education visa. Just set up a company and get a non b visa with work permit.
Dan ********
@Jay ****
if the company is not trading genuinely, then that too, is abuse of the system. And all the old boys that use an agent to get past the retirement visa requirememt for 800,000 baht bank deposit, is also abuse of the system.
Blade ********
@Jay ****
but do you mean just a company on paper that doesn't exist? What would that cost? 😅
Dan ********
I think this is the third post recently about demands for cash being made at immigration at BKK (Suvarnaphumi Airport). I thought it would be the last place that IO's would be blatently asking for cash bungs, but it appears some officers are. Maybe rogue IO's trying to make a quick buck under the noses of their superiors, or maybe with their blessing. And I think if you pay as requested, and you're not a total dick, they haven't got much reason to put a marker on your file, and they wont want to draw attention to your file either, as they certainly won't be recording the transaction of 2000 baht cash payment. So maybe you were just unlucky, got the bastard IO, and the next IO will be more forgiving. I would recommend strictly a land crossing. Infact I'd speak to a visa run agent, and they want to pre-screen you anyway, they'll send copy of passport ahead to be ok'd. This will tell you if you are able to visarun/border bounce. You can use a visarun agent also to arrange to do more than the yearly 2 land crossings limit, you just have to ask and get a confirmed yes. And many can accommodate a little overstay too. But a few don't.
Dan ********
@Blade *******
speak to an agent, all can fix it for you. I'm sure there are different ways to structure it, but I was told a start up of 80k, and 70k a year, so 150k year 1, then 70k a year after that. Others may say differently.
Jay *****
@Blade *******
Everything is about cost. If you can't afford the cost I would suggest stay in your own country.
Jonathan **************************
@Jay ****

Jay *****
@Jonathan *************************

Sorry, that was supposed to be tagged at Blade Muller.

All threads I've seen seem to be of him complaining about Thailand, calling them "third-world" etc.
Blade ********
@Jona****
well I don't dislike Thailand. I just dislike that some Thai Officials or Immigration Officials think they have the perfect country and all the rich people want to come to their third world country to breath in some burning plastic trash fumes or burning season pm2.5. or get killed on the roads so they can make ridiculous visa requirements. I wanna have their drugs. They really live in an DMT dream world. 😂😅

Totally a moron. If you are poor, then Thailand is not a place suitable for you. It's a place where the rich enjoy.
Blade ********
@J**
im not poor. But Thailand is a poor third world country where backpackers and sexpats enjoy. Rich "quality tourists" go to Singapore, Hawaii, Dubai, Italy, France, Monaco and so on. Rich people don't want to get third world cancer from the burning season and plastic trash burning. That's only in Prayuths wet dreams. 😂
