You friend likely has a "Visa Exempt" stamp rather than a Visa on Arrival. It can be extended at any Immigration office for a further 30 days for 1,900 aht.

 Never cancelled. During the 14 day quarantine it was raised to 45 days to compensate but now back at 30 days.
