A few days trip out of Thailand will give you another 30 days visa exemption as explained, and this is a good option if you plan and would like some days in a nearby country anyway. Just remember if you enter without any visa on a 30 days visa exemption, you formally need an onward ticket out of Thailand within 30 days anyway.

There’s no 30 days visa, just a 30 days visa exemption as explained.

Pointless discussion and your argument don’t make any sense. The deposit you did for your first year extension of stay based on a Non O visa thirteen years ago don’t justify why people in the same situation need to maintain an expensive thai insurance because how they entered Thailand thirteen years ago. All Non O visas can all be the base for extension of stay and there’s no logical explanation whatsoever why the mandatory health insurance just is attached to an initial Non O-A.

But you just didn’t get the point then.

I don’t think you got my point or fully understand the consequences with entering on a Non O-A visa. Even with an affidavit letter or income method, the mandatory health insurance is stuck with all your extension of stay in Thailand in the future if you used a Non O-A visa to enter in the first place, -unlike extension of stay based Non O. That’s why several people after a while choose to cancel their stay based on a Non O-A, re-enter on a tourist visa or visa exemption and apply for a Non O from scratch instead.

Previously we could get a notary confirmation of your driving licenses from the Norwegian embassy. They don’t offer this service anymore and we are required to have an IDP as well to covert our licenses into thai license. An IDP is also required for driving legally in Thailand for up to three months.

But why they don’t want to ensure it on an extension of stay based on a regular Non O, just extension of stay based on Non O-A? The deposit requirement is only a case if your embassy doesn’t offer to give you an affidavit letter. And if you switch to the income method for the second extension of stay, the mandatory health insurance is still attached just to the Non O-A.

You’re required to show proof that you physically are in the US when you apply for a tourist visa in the e-visa portal. You might also prove that you started your travel from the US, but when you’ve got your tourist visa I’m quite confident that you’re allowed to enter all borders into Thailand within the three months validity of your tourist visa as Graham also assumes. I mean you could easily wait until the last days before your visa expires and enter Thailand from the US by any other third country without any restrictions or issues. The tourist visa is just a pdf file you print out and put in your passport before you enter the border. The immigration doesn’t have any insight in the documentation you provided when you applied at home. If you can -if asked at the border- show proof of documentation for accommodation and a ticket out of Thailand within the validity of the visa, it should be sufficient.

I know one guy just booked the whole stay in a hotel app and cancelled everything after he applied for his visa in Penang. This is from Penang consulate.
