What are the best long-term visa options for an American expat wishing to live in Thailand?

What my husband and I did is we hired an agent in Bangkok and he took care of all of our visas and our banking for us we also hired an agent in Bangkok that provided us with our health insurance. I know it cost a little bit more money to hire an agent, but better safe than sorry.
